How can I find a book?

You can search the library catalog from any of the computers in the library or by accessing the library homepage at http://www.misericordia.edu/library and selecting “search the library catalog”. Books are identified as checked out or on the shelf. If the book you want is checked out, you may place a hold on it. The when the book is returned, the library staff will notify you. If the library does not have the book you’re looking for, you can obtain it through interlibrary loan.

Do I need an ID to check out materials?

Library materials can be checked out to students, faculty, and staff. To verify that you are a member of the campus community, your name must be identified in the library system. Usually by the third week of the semester, the library has accurate identification of students. When you receive your Misericordia ID, it should have a library barcode attached. If you don’t have an ID with a barcode, the library will add the barcode the first time you check out materials. Please bring your ID with you to the library when checking out library resources.

How long can I keep a book or video?

The loan period is 21 days for books and 3 days for videos or DVDs. The loan period can be extended one time by stopping by or calling the circulation desk (x6231) or renewing the item online. To renew online, contact the circulation desk for your pin number and use the user services menu in the library catalog. Reserve items have limited loan periods which are set by the professor and generally cannot by extended.

My books are due next weekend. May I renew them now?

All library materials may be renewed one time unless another patron has placed a hold on that item. You can stop by the circulation desk, renew by phone (x6231), or renew online at any time before their due date.

How do I make interlibrary loan requests?

From the library homepage, select the link for interlibrary loan. You will fill out the interlibrary loan request online. Make sure to select the proper form depending on whether you want books or articles. You need to complete a separate request form for each book or journal you want to receive. When the library receives the book or print copy of the journal article, you will be notified by email to pick up the book or copy at the circulation desk. If you are requesting an article that can be sent electronically, you will receive an email with directions on how to access the article. Please be aware that some institutions will charge the library for interlibrary loan materials and that fee may be passed on to you.

How do I find materials that my professor has placed on reserves?

From the library homepage, select find course reserves. If the reserve item is a book, photocopy, video, or other physical item, you can check out the item at the circulation desk. If the professor is using electronic reserves (ereserves), you can access the full-text of the article in pdf format in WebCT.

How do I get to the databases?

From the library homepage, click on “search for articles.” Databases are arranged by subject. Contact the reference desk for assistance with searching databases (x6352).

How can I tell if the library has the journal I’m looking for?

From the library homepage, click on “search for journal by title.” Enter the title of the journal into the search box; journal finder results will identify whether the library owns the print subscription and/or whether the journal is available online and in which databases.

Do you have fax available at the library?

The fax number for the circulation desk is 570-674-3035. You can also send faxes from the library. The cost is $.50 for the first page and $.10 for each additional page. See the circulation staff for help.

Does the library have copiers?

Coin-operated photocopiers are available on the first and second floors of the library.

Can you give me change?

The library has a very limited amount of change on hand. Check with the circulation desk or reference desk to see if change is available.

I have a research project due. Where can I get help?

Contact the reference desk (x6352) for assistance. The staff will help you with a topic and formulate a plan to identify good resources to use. They can tell you which databases are most helpful and provide assistance in identifying the best sources to use for your research.
