Employment of relatives of University employees is permitted except where one would:

  • have authority or practical power to supervise, appoint, remove, or discipline the other
  • evaluate the other's work
  • participate in hiring or internal promotion of a relative
  • be placed in circumstances where the relationship would lead to actual or potential conflict of interest

Relatives are defined as spouse, child, mother, father, sister, or brother, grandparents, grandchildren, in-laws of the same relationship.

Employment of relatives within the same department may be appropriate when justified by unique skills or talents. In this instance, hiring must be approved by the President upon written recommendation of the appropriate Dean/Vice President. Upon approval, reporting relationship, evaluation, and promotion is determined by the Dean/Vice President.
