Off-campus internships provide valuable practical experience in media, law, and other areas, as well as contacts with professionals in the field. The English Department has established good relationships with local media outlets and other businesses. These outlets include two daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, several local radio stations and public relations offices, and local TV affiliates for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS. Internships are available for students in English/Pre-Law at local law offices and at the offices of the County Courthouse.
On-campus activities include The Highlander, a student-run newspaper, and Instress, a literary magazine that is published every semester. Cash prizes are awarded for poetry, fiction, photography, and artwork. The English Department also sponsors an annual poetry contest for high school students. Students on the Instress staff and English faculty judge entries. In addition, the Literary Club offers students the chance to be involved in a number of activities it sponsors, including poetry readings, a holiday tea near Christmas, Instress Cafe Night, an Instress reading and reception, and a Stress Relief Cafe. Many English majors also choose to be involved with the Misericordia Players, a student theatre group that puts on a play each semester. Last year's productions were Moon over Buffalo and Lizzie Borden of Fall River.
