Admissions Requirements

Successful freshman applicants to Misericordia University's Medical Imaging program will typically have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and a combined SAT score of 950 (math and critical reading) or 20 ACT composite score. They will also have taken 3 years of high school math and 1 year of Biology all with a minimum grade of "C".

Transfer applications to the Medical Imaging program are only accepted for the freshman or sophomore level, and only with the successful completion of appropriate prerequisites, and based on clinical availability. Successful transfer applicants will typically hold a minimum collegiate grade point average of 2.75. Students having completed less than 24 credits will be considered freshman applicants. Freshman level transfer applicants for the January semester must have 12 credits that apply toward the major, 4 of which are Anatomy & Physiology I. Transfers into the sophomore class must have a minimum of 24 credits that apply toward the major; 8 of which must be Anatomy and Physiology I and II.

Misericordia University reviews individual applications carefully, and the above stated standards should be seen only as general guidelines. The Director of Admissions and individual department chairs reserve the right to exercise discretion in any admissions decision.

Scholarships

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS are available ranging from $3,000 to $18,000 per academic year. After the Admissions Committee accepts a student to the University, a Scholarship Committee automatically reviews that student's eligibility for a Presidential Scholarship. No formal application for scholarship consideration is required. The value of the scholarship is based upon grade point average, class rank and SAT or ACT score. The number of scholarships is not limited, and will be awarded to all who qualify.

MCAULEY AWARDS are available ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year. The McAuley Award is offered to students who demonstrate records of leadership, volunteerism and participation in extracurricular activities. A McAuley Award application is available as part of the electronic application for admission www.admissions.misericordia.edu. Articulation Agreements with LCCC and Keystone College

The Medical Imaging program has formal articulation agreements with both Luzerne County Community College's Associate in Science degree in General Studies Program and Keystone College's Associate in Applied Science in Medical Imaging Program. Graduates of either program who have successfully completed the stated curricula may enter Misericordia University's Medical Imaging program at the professional level under the dual admission agreement.

Retention and Promotion

Freshmen Retention

Cumulative GPA of 2.3 at the end of the spring semester as well as a minimum grade of C- in MI 100, BIO 121/122, all taken at this level. Students will be placed on program probation if their GPA is <2.3 at the end of the Fall semester, freshman year.

Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Year Retention

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3 overall & in the major (based on MI coded courses) at the end of each semester of each year. In addition, a minimum grade of "C-" in all MI coded courses, BIO 121/122 or 211/212, and PHY 118 is required.

Additional Retention Requirements:

Submission of the following to the Medical Imaging Clinical Coordinator:

CPR certification prior to the start of clinic and recertification prior to expiration as long as the student is enrolled in a clinical experience. The student is responsible for attending to expiration dates.
Medical documentation that confirms the student's ability to successfully fulfill all program requirements, inclusive of a 10 panel drug screen.
Results of a PA criminal background check, child abuse clearance, as well as a Federal criminal history clearance, inclusive of fingerprints.
Continuous enrollment in Medical Imaging courses from matriculation through graduation (with the exception of those on maternity leave). The University does not grant a medical leave or leave of absence, however the Medical Imaging major will allow a leave of absence only in the case of pregnancy, as required by their program accreditor.

Graduation Requirements

Cumulative GPA of 2.3, as well as a minimum GPA of 2.3 in MI coded courses; minimum of 120 credits, depending on the track chosen; a minimum score of 74% on the Assessment test, administered in MI 415, Senior Seminar; and satisfactory completion of all Misericordia University's requirements (both financial and academic).

Probation

The student will be placed on program probation for the following semester if any one of the following occurs:

The cumulative grade point average is below the stipulated requirement.
The major G.P.A. is below the stipulated requirement.

THE STUDENT WILL BE PLACED ON IMMEDIATE PROBATION IF A RECORDED VIOLATION OF THE CODE OF ETHICS OCCURS AT ANY TIME.

THE STUDENT WILL BE REMOVED FROM PROGRAM PROBATION WHEN:

The stipulated cumulative grade point average and/or G.P.A. in the major is achieved;
The terms of probation are met.

STUDENTS CAN BE PLACED ON PROGRAM PROBATION ONLY ONE TIME.

Dismissal

Dismissal of the student from the Medical Imaging Program will result if any one of the following occur:

The student commits a "serious" infraction of the code of ethics, or violates a program policy that states program dismissal (see individual program policies). If a student is dismissed and files a grievance, they must follow the university policy on the grievance process. During this time, the student cannot attend medical imaging classes.
The student fails to meet the terms of probation.
The student does not earn a grade of "C-" or above in all Medical Imaging courses (any course with an MI code), as well as BIO 121/122 or BIO 211/212 and PHY 118.( If taken off-campus, a minimum grade of "C" is required).
The stipulated GPA (overall & in the major) is not met for the second consecutive semester.

Re-admission

Once a student is dismissed from the Medical Imaging program for academic reasons, he/she may apply for re-admission for the following year. This is due to the sequential nature of the Medical Imaging curricula. The student has the opportunity to submit a letter of intent (signed and dated) to the Medical Imaging department chairperson for re-admission into the program no later than the end of the semester following the semester in which the student was dismissed. The request will be presented to the full-time Medical Imaging faculty for consideration providing the following criteria are met: an achieved overall GPA of 2.75, successful completion of all criteria that were the reasons for the initial dismissal, and the provision that clinical space is available. Once re-admitted, minimum GPA requirements apply. In addition, students who wish to be considered for re-admission must first grade replace all MI and/or science courses in which a grade of "C-" or above was not earned. Previous performance in both clinical and didactic courses will also be considered. Notification of reacceptance will be in writing from the department chairperson prior to June 1 or January 1, depending upon which semester the student is re-entering.

Depending upon the reason for the original dismissal as well as the length of time until the student re-enters, students may be required to audit specific program and/or cognate course previously taken as a stipulation for re-admission. These courses can only be taken as "Audit" and cannot earn credits if successfully taken previously. The requirements for re-admission will be determined by the full-time Medical Imaging faculty and communicated to the student in writing for consideration of acceptance of the re-admission offer. Failure by the student to agree to the conditions for re-admission will result in the offer being revoked. In addition, all re-admitted students must successfully repeat all previously completed clinical competencies on a pass/fail basis only. If re-admission is granted, minimum GPA requirements,as stated above, apply. In adddition, if a student is required to audit lab courses, a fee for monthly radiation badges will be the responsibility of the student.

If a student is dismissed a second time, he/she will not be readmitted.
