Course Description:

This course focuses on the diversity of influences of home and family, culture and society that shape the social and emotional development of children. It stresses an anti-bias approach.

Course Goals:

This course provides students the opportunity to:

  1. analyze the effects of family on the social and emotional development of young children.
  2. explore issues of race, gender, class, age, appearance, religion and sexual orientation as societal influences on young children's lives.
  3. practice teaching techniques that foster pluralism.
  4. use oral and written communication to interact with children, families, and staff about pluralism.

Student Learning Objectives or Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Goal 1:

  1. identify family factors that affect the social/emotional development of young children.
  2. research and conduct a visual presentation that reflects societal influences on the family.

Goal 2:

  1. analyze materials for bias and stereotyping.
  2. carry out individual child assessments and activities related to the development of bias and self-concept.

Goal 3:

  1. plan and carry out a lesson incorporating anti-bias/multicultural objectives.
  2. develop materials from which children can experience, examine and talk about feelings and perceptions related to bias and multicultural issues.
  3. assess early childhood environments for stereotyping and bias.

Goal 4:

  1. maintain a personal journal reflecting critical thinking and examination of pluralistic attitudes.
  2. develop a philosophy and policies communicating anti-bias and multicultural values.
