02-21-08
MU offers camps for four majors.
Misericordia University is again offering high school juniors and seniors the opportunity for unique, hands-on academic learning at five Misericordia Career Exploration Summer Camps starting June 22.

During the three- and four-day overnight camps, the students will receive a firsthand look into a particular career field through a mixture of clinical, laboratory, classroom and field experience. Students will also experience what it is like to live on campus during their overnight stay. Camps will be held in the biology, communications, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and teacher education fields.

The three-day, two-night Misericordia Future Teachers’ Camp will be held June 22-24 at the campus in Dallas. During this residential camp, students interested in learning about the education profession will participate in hands-on sessions designed to introduce future teachers to methods and strategies utilized by real teachers to make learning fun and to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Participants will also be given the opportunity to observe the Lil’ Cougars Summer Camps involving youngsters ages 7-11, being held on campus concurrent with the Future Teachers’ Camp. Program requirements of Misericordia’s Teacher Education Department will also be reviewed.

The Future Teachers’ Camp costs $75 and space is limited. For more information or to register please contact Dr. Susan Tomascik, Ph.D., stomasci@misericordia.edu or call (570) 674-6290.

The four-day, three-night Communications Summer Camp on June 22-25 will offer students the chance to explore careers in electronic media and journalism and in video production. Offering a unique hands-on opportunity that in the past has attracted students from as far away as Texas, students will produce and star in their own television news program, create their own newspaper and produce their own radio commercials. They will also visit a local newspaper and sit in on a live local television newscast.

Camp participants will receive a copy of their camp activities, including a four-color newspaper, CD copy of their radio commercial, and a DVD copy of their television project.

For more information or to register for the Communications Summer camp, please contact Helen Bogdon at 570-674-6378 or hbogdon@misericordia.edu. The camp costs $85 and space is limited.

The four-day, three-night Biology Summer Camp on June 22-25 is designed for students interested in careers in the biological sciences. Participants will experience working in teams and assist with a comprehensive research project with students and faculty in the biology program at Misericordia. The experience will immerse students into basic biological research, analysis and the communication of research findings, and expose them to several specialties in the life sciences. A focus of the camp is a field trip to Ricketts Glen State Park where the students will evaluate environmental impacts on the local ecosystem by analyzing water samples from a stressed stream that they will collect using modern sampling techniques.

For more information or to register for the Biology Summer Camp, please contact Dr. Anthony Serino, Ph.D.. at 570-674-6259 or aserino@misericodia.edu. The camp costs $85 and space is limited.

The newly expanded four-day, three-night Speech-Language Pathology Summer Camp on June 22-25 will allow students to explore the many career options in the growing SLP field. Campers will tour the department’s state-of-the-art facilities and local health care facilities, such as St. Joseph’s Center, John Heinz Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and Valley ENT, to learn how patients with different communication disorders are treated and the variety of ways that speech therapists are employed. Speech therapy services are needed in schools, hospitals, nursing care facilities, home health care settings, outpatient care centers, child day care centers, and institutions of higher education.

For more information or to register for the Speech-Language Pathology Camp, please contact Donna DiBlasi at 570-674-6724 or ddiblasi@misericordiaa.edu. The camp costs $125 and space is limited.

The three-day, two-night Occupational Therapy Summer Camp on June 22-24 will give students the opportunity to learn about the occupational therapy profession, meet faculty and students in the OT department and tour clinical sites in the region where occupational therapists practice. Community site visits will allow students to observe the wide range of services offered by OT therapists, including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, hospital treatments and pediatric services.

“This extremely popular camp provides an excellent opportunity to see clinicians in action and get a feel for what OT students learn in class,” said Joseph A. Cipriani, Jr., Ed.D., occupational therapy professor at Misericordia University. “Our success is evidenced by the number of students who started as campers and are now students in the OT program.”

The cost of the camp is $90 and enrollment is limited. This camp has sold out early in the registration process the past three years. For more information, contact Debbie Carey at 570-674-6391 or dcarey3@misericordia.edu.
