Academic camp introduces high school students to occupational therapy
07-2-12

The annual camp is held in June.
Misericordia University provided rising high school seniors the unique opportunity to gain extensive hands-on experience in an exciting health care specialty field at the annual Occupational Therapy Career Exploration Camp in June.

The three-day, two-night Occupational Therapy Career Exploration Camp gave students the opportunity to learn about the occupational therapy profession, meet faculty and students in the OT department and tour clinical sites in Northeastern Pennsylvania where occupational therapists practice. Community site visits allowed students to observe the wide range of services offered by OT therapists, including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, hospital treatments and pediatric services.

Through the years, the camp has been very popular with high school students who wish to explore a possible career in this specialized health care field. Students have routinely stated in exit surveys that the camp provided them the information and tools they needed to make an educated decision on future careers.

The Misericordia University Occupational Therapy Career Exploration Camp is one of eight popular career exploration camps that Misericordia University offers in June. MU also offers residential academic camps in biology, business, chemistry and biochemistry, English, communications and media, nursing and speech-language pathology. During the three- and four-day academic camps, participating students receive a firsthand look into a particular career field through a mixture of clinical, laboratory, classroom and field experiences. Students also experience what it is like to live on campus during their overnight stay.
