Biology Camp

The Department of Biology at Misericordia University is hosting a three-day Exploration Camp June 25 - 28, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with additional evening activities. This camp is perfect for students entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2018.

This camp is for students interested in learning about various professions in the Biological Sciences. This "Bio Camp" has been developed for qualified high school students who are curious and motivated to learn about career opportunities in the Biological Sciences.
During the Biology Camp, students will

  • Interact with faculty and current Biology majors.
  • Work in groups to conduct a biological research project by exploring an urbanized aquatic stream and riparian habitat ecosystem using current sampling and data collection techniques. Project completion will require using principles and processes adapted from a variety of biological sub-disciplines, such as Microbiology, Ecology, Biodiversity, Organism Anatomy, and Physiology. The research project will include experiences in various laboratory, field, and library/research literature settings.
  • Work in groups to analyze and evaluate environmental impacts on that ecosystem by consideration of biodiversity data, water quality, and human influences. Will include use of DNA extraction processes as well as identification, biosensor and chemical titration equipment.
  • Maintain an appropriate record of research activities according to proper scientific protocols.
  • Compile and present group findings to peers, faculty, and the public.

Please bring walking/hiking shoes, hat with shade brim, and appropriate outdoor clothing highly recommended, including sunscreen.

Chemical and Biochemical Sciences Camp

The Chemistry/Biochemistry department at Misericordia invites students entering 12th grade in the fall of 2018 to explore careers in the chemical and biochemical sciences. This experience will be a three/day/two evening camp June 25 - 27 that will be available to students entering their senior year in high school. Students who are interested in learning about the assortment of careers that a degree in chemistry or biochemistry can lead to are strongly encouraged to attend. Students will work together on projects in the areas of alternative energy resources, water quality, forensics, and pharmaceuticals gaining hands-on experience with instrumentation. This camp will offer field trips to facilities that will highlight the activities students complete first hand.

Students who attend this camp will also:

  • Interact with faculty in the Chemistry/Biochemistry department
  • Work in teams to synthesize and analyze samples of bio-diesel from vegetable oil
  • Acquire water samples and test the quality of water using laboratory instruments
  • Complete an assortment of activities on the importance of chemistry and biochemistry in forensics
  • Use technology and instrumentation to further understand data collected during these activities
  • Present the activities that they have done with their peers and faculty

Communications and Media Camp

The Department of Communications at Misericordia University is hosting a three-and-a-half day, three-night residential Career Exploration Camp for students interested in learning about the Communications and Media professions.

Dates: June 25 - 28, 2017

Time: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, with additional evening activities

Cost: $90

This camp is designed for students entering 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2018; seniors admitted first.

Camp participants will:

  • Create a television magazine show
  • Learn studio and field production techniques
  • Take still photographs, and write newspaper feature stories and design a full-color newspaper
  • Afterward, they will receive copies of their media products as their first entries into their pre-professional media portfolios.

The three-night residential camp offers students the opportunity to thoroughly explore print, television and new media careers.

Literature Camp

Misericordia's three-and-a-half day, three-night residential camp is designed for high school juniors and seniors who have a passion for stories, poems, novels, and the stage.

Participants will have the unique privilege to work with Misericordia faculty in a variety of workshop settings, including creative writing, literary adaptation, literature and pop culture, and literature in the multi-media age.

This year’s theme will be The Gothic.

Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Misericordia University is hosting a four-day and three-night residential Career Exploration Camp for rising high school seniors interested in learning about the profession of Speech-Language Pathology.

Speech-Language pathologists are employed in schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health care settings, outpatient rehabilitation centers, day care centers for children and adults, and institutions of higher education.

Dates: June 25 - 28, 2017

Time: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, with additional evening activities

Cost: $95

This camp is designed for students entering 12th grade in the fall of 2018.

Students who attend the camp will:

  • Tour the department’s state-of-the-art academic and clinic facilities at John J. Passan Hall
  • Learn about the career field from faculty, staff, and guest lecturers
  • Plan and conduct therapeutic activities with clients
  • Hear first-hand from clients and their families about their experiences with speech therapy
  • Explore cutting-edge equipment used for research and therapeutic purposes
  • Observe live therapy sessions in the MU Speech-Language and Hearing Center

Health Sciences Middle School Career Camp

The Health Sciences Interprofessional Middle School Career Camp offers a hands-on opportunity to learn about Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Sonography, Medical Imaging, Physicians Assistant, Nursing, Speech and Language Pathology, and other health science-related career fields in a fun, dynamic, and interactive environment. Taught by University Professors and Graduate Assistants, students will gain an understanding of these different career paths as they begin to think about their future.

Students will use the Anatomage Virtual Dissection Table to learn basic Anatomy and Physiology, as well as basic Neurology. Students will understand the many health science fields and how they are similar and different. Be prepared for a fun and educational week that will have your child loving the health sciences!
