Goals and Objectives

The business department aims to prepare students for success in both their careers and life. This is accomplished through a holistic and integrated approach to learning which enable students to adapt to new and changing business paradigms. The department aims to develop students analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to help them to integrate real-world based learning experiences with business concepts and practices. Importantly, the department emphasizes the development of a framework for ethical decision-making, and strives to give students the ability to recognize and understand awareness of social and ethical issues relevant to business. Consequently, students should develop the ability to recognize and understand the values of mercy, justice, and hospitality.

Undergraduate Options

Dual Degree Programs

BS/MBA 5-Year Program

The BS/MBA 5-Year program is for eligible rising Misericordia University seniors within a business-related major or seeking a bachelor of science degree in a major which affords the ability to take all MBA pre-requisite courses and contains adequate free elective space. Accepted students will take up to 12 MBA credits within their senior year to also serve as the fulfillment of required undergraduate free elective credits within their current program.

BS/BA/Organizational Management 5-Year Program

The BS/BA/Organizational Management 5-Year program is for eligible rising Misericordia University juniors/seniors within the following majors:

  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography (bachelor degree)
  • History
  • Medical Imaging

Accepted students will take up to 12 OM credits within their junior/senior year to also serve as the fulfillment of required undergraduate free elective credits within their current program.

Expressway

Offered through our Expressway Accelerated Degree Program, you can earn your Bachelor of Science in as little as 2 1/2 years by attending classes part-time. Expressway's convenient and predictable schedule allows you take classes either once a week or online, allowing you to earn up to 12 credits per semester. Courses are offered face-to-face in 5-week sessions at Luzerne County Community College on the Nanticoke Campus and at Lackawanna College, or online in 7 1/2 week sessions.

The Expressway program is the quickest route to a bachelor's degree. It is designed for highly motivated adults who want to earn their degree in a timely manner, have prior college credits, and have work or relevant life experience. Students have the ability to enroll eight different times during the year, not just in the fall and spring.

Accreditation

Misericordia University has received specialized accreditation for its business programs through the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) located at 11374 Strang Line Road in Lenexa, Kansas, USA. The business programs in the following degrees are accredited by the IACBE:

· Master of Business Administration

· Master of Science in Organizational Management

· Bachelor of Science in Accounting

· Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

· Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management

· Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

· Bachelor of Science in Sport Management

Admissions Requirements

Students may submit a free online application at www.misericordia.edu/apply. The minimum criteria for admission into the undergraduate Business programs as a freshman student are:

  • Class rank in the top half of the high school graduating class and/or a cumulative 2.5 grade point average
  • Minimum combined SAT score of 850 for Critical Reading and Math (combined) if taken prior to March 5, 2016, or 930 if taken after March 5, 2016. In lieu of the SAT, ACT results may be presented with a minimum required composite score of 18

Successful transfer applicants will typically hold a minimum collegiate grade point average of 2.0, having completed at least 15 college credits. Please note the above listed requirements are general, and that each application is looked at thoroughly, taking into account individual grades, academic rigor, and other factors.

Financial Aid

Students may become eligible for financial aid in the form of grants and loans by submitting the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov. Scholarships are provided to full-time students based on merit and need. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive some form of financial aid.

BS/MBA 5-Year Program

MBA 5th Year Program

Program Highlights

The MBA 5th Year program is for eligible Misericordia University seniors with the following majors: Accounting, Business Administration, Health Care Management, and Sport Management. At entry into the program accepted students must meet all MBA admissions criteria in the catalog, must have completed all prerequisites for the program, and must have a minimum 9 credits of free electives remaining in their degree requirements. Admitted students will take a minimum of 9 credits and a maximum of 12 credits* of MBA courses within their senior year not to exceed their number of remaining free electives within their current program. *Students pursuing the Accounting Specialization will take a maximum of 6 credits.


The MBA program consists of 36 credits of study that can be completed evenings and/or online.* Students must complete a core curriculum of 24 credits and a specialization area of 12 credits.

BA/BS/Organizational Management 5-Year Program

OM 5th-Year Program

Program Highlights

The BS/BA/Organizational Management 5-Year program is for eligible rising Misericordia University juniors/seniors within the following majors:

  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography (bachelor degree)
  • History
  • Medical Imaging

Accepted students will take up to 12 OM credits within their junior/senior year to also serve as the fulfillment of required undergraduate free elective credits within their current program.

The program consists of 36 credits of study that can be completed on an evening and/or online format on a part-time basis, or on a daytime full-time basis in a 5 year undergraduate/OM course sequence. Students must complete a core curriculum of 24 credits and a specialization area of 12 credits.

MBA/OM 5th Year Admissions Requirements

  • At the end of the junior year, students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and a GPA in business functional areas prerequisite courses of 3.0 or higher (if applying for the MBA 5th Year program).
  • Students must have at least 12 credits of free electives available to qualify
  • Current juniors must submit a free online part-time graduate application at www.misericordia.edu/apply for the first graduate semester after which the bachelor's degree will be conferred.
  • Following the application evaluation by the Admissions Acceptance Committee, an acceptance decision will be rendered. If positive, then a conditional acceptance letter will be issued stipulating that the student must earn a 3.0 in each MBA/OM course and in his/her bachelor's degree to be fully accepted upon graduation.
  • The acceptance letter will stipulate that the student is now eligible within his/her senior year (or junior/senior year if DMS or MI major applying for OM 5th Year program) to take up to 12 MBA/OM credits to serve as undergraduate free elective credits depending on number of free elective credits are available.
  • Accepted students will work with his/her academic advisor as an undergraduate student to select appropriate MBA/OM courses for the upcoming semester. Selected courses will be communicated to the Graduate Admissions representative so that the registration request can be submitted to the Registrar's office for processing.
  • After meeting all stated requirements and successfully earning his/her bachelor's degree, the student will work directly with the Graduate Admissions representative for the graduate business programs for his/her initial graduate semester advisement and registration. Once the student has been registered for the first graduate semester, a graduate academic advisor will be assigned to the student for future advisement.
