More than 400 health care professionals, health and medical sciences students, and members of the public attended Misericordia University's eighth annual Health Care Symposium, "Inspiring Leadership to Patient-Centered Care,'' with keynote speaker, Rear Admiral Scott F. Giberson, Assistant U.S. Surgeon General, and Liz Jazwiec, R.N., in October.

Rear Admiral Giberson, a native of West Wyoming, addressed the importance of executive leadership to catalyze teams across the complete spectrum of the health care delivery system. Jazwiec's presentation concentrated on the impact the health care system has on health care workers.

The free program also featured two breakout sessions. Rear Admiral Giberson met with health and medical sciences students to discuss careers in health care, while also offering motivational words for those considering a career in health care. The caregiver session included a panel discussion with chief nursing officers from Allied Integrated Health Services and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. The panel discussion addressed interprofessional and patient-centered care initiatives at the two health care facilities.
