Josh Wickard, '26
Josh Wickard, '26

Meet Josh Wickard, '26, a Health Science major interning with the Children's Service Center of Wyoming Valley. Josh assists with medical records, while gaining valuable administrative experience in adoption and foster care services. He credits the CSC for helping him build skills for his future in the healthcare and human services field. And he's grateful for the chance to grow while helping others in such a meaningful way.

Abbie Christman
Abbie Christman '27

Meet Abbie Christman, '27, a Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) major with a passion for photography. Abbie is interning with MU's Marketing & PR Department, taking photos for athletic and other campus events.

She also provides film content for MU's social media. In addition, Abbie is the Social Media Manager for the Cougar Activity Council, Assistant Social Media Coordinator for the DMS Club, and Peer Tutor for the Student Success Center.

Abbie is a Rock Star in and out of the classroom!

Jocelyn Bergener '23

I was a student in the Medical Imaging program who recently graduated in December 2023. I started my educational journey at Misericordia in the Fall of 2021. My last semester, I took an internship in the cardiac catheterization lab. Since graduation, I passed my boards and took a job at Geisinger CMC, the cardiac cath lab where I was initially an intern. I was a non-traditional student coming to Misericordia. I am a mom, a wife, and a veteran. I was honorably discharged after a four-year contract in January 2021, and began school at LCCC that spring. I had a great experience at Misericordia, and I am thankful my professors encouraged me every step of the way.

Stephanie Fazio ‘24 ‘25

Stephanie Fazio ‘24 ‘25 is entering her first year of graduate school for Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)! Stephanie chose the field of speech-language pathology because she has always had a passion for helping children. She fell in love with the field in high school when she did a research project about children who stutter and when she attended Misericordia’s Speech Camp in the summer of 2019. Besides speech pathology, Stephanie has many hobbies and other passions. She dances for the Misericordia Dance Ensemble, is involved in many clubs on campus, such as NSSLHA and GPP, and is a researcher in the Misericordia SLP department. She is also a tutor for the Student Success Center. She likes to volunteer, enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and likes to stay physically active when she has free time.

Maria Ryczek, CRNP
Maria E. Ryczek, MSN, CRNP, FNP-c.

My name is Maria Ryczek, CRNP. I am enrolled in a Doctoral Nursing Practice program at Misericordia University, with expected graduation in August 2024. In the last semester of my master’s degree at Misericordia, I had the privilege to meet Sr. Ruth Neely, CRNP, and The Ryan White Clinic staff and mission. During that semester, I learned more about infectious diseases and the care for this population. My passion for infectious diseases, especially HIV, has grown so much that I decided (under Sr. Ruth's wings) to carry out my quality project for my doctoral program at the clinic. During my time at the clinic, I observed that a huge factor that plays a significant impact on patient treatment is stigma. I also lived it as a child and part of my adulthood when my mother lost her battle with AIDS. I aim to find out if group support helps reduce stigma in adults older than 18. Stigma is a big issue this community faces, and I believe it is our job as humans to understand and help others live a quality life.

Working with rural and underserved communities is one of my passions in medicine and my primary driving factor for pursuing the AHEC (Area Health Education Center) scholars program. Roughly 80% of the United States rural populations are considered medically underserved. With the ongoing corporatization of the health care industry there is potential for this percentage to further increase. One way I see to combat this astounding percentage is to educate future medical professionals about the healthcare disparities rural populations experience and teach realistic ways to approach them. The AHEC scholars program works to fulfill this additional educational need about these population. The scholar’s program has provided me with many interprofessional discussions with health professions students with similar passions as mine and lectures from health care professionals who work in rural medicine. This has given me insight into many areas of disparities that rural and underserved populations struggle with. All of these experiences are helping to shape me into a better medical provider.

Jenna Potter
Jenna Potter '25

My name is Jenna, and I am in the graduate occupational therapy program. I will be graduating with my occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) in 2025! I absolutely love occupational therapy and its value in providing holistic and meaningful care. I completed my first fieldwork at Centerlight HealthCare which is an all inclusive program for the elderly. Here, I had experience in outpatient as well as with home health evaluations. I am currently completing my second fieldwork experience at The Center for Discovery, which is a residential school for children with complex disabilities. At Misericordia I am involved in the Integrated Studies Program. This is a program that offers the college experience to individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. I am highly passionate about inclusive higher education and creating a space where all individuals have the opportunity to learn and grow as students. My experiences here are leading me to become an educated and skilled clinician within the field of OT with a concentration in leadership, research and program development throughout my time in fieldwork as well as the OTD capstone series.
