Community Education Ceramic Class

Student Code of Conduct

We are delighted to have you join our community pottery program at Misericordia University. These classes provide a creative and supportive environment where individuals of all skill levels can learn, grow, and enjoy the art of ceramics. To ensure that every participant has a safe, respectful, and positive experience, we ask that all students follow the guidelines below. These expectations help maintain a clean and functional studio, protect University resources, and promote a welcoming community atmosphere for all.

Studio Etiquette

Practice kindness, patience, and respect for your classmates, instructors, and the studio space. A positive atmosphere allows creativity to flourish and helps build a supportive community of artists. Harassment of any Misericordia University student, employee, faculty, or staff member will not be tolerated and may result in immediate removal from the class without refund.

Studio Participation and Attendance

Students are expected to attend the class session for which they are registered. Each class includes a 15-minute grace period after instruction ends to allow time for cleaning, organizing tools, and wrapping up projects. If you need to stay beyond your scheduled time, please make prior arrangements with your instructor. Any special permission applies only to that specific class and expires at the end of the current six-week session.

Consecutive Class Sessions

If you are registered for two consecutive sessions, you are required to take a break during the time between classes. For example, if your first session is 3:00–5:00 p.m. and the second is 6:00–8:00 p.m., you must leave the studio between 5:15 and 6:00 p.m. to allow for class transition and studio reset.

Studio Access

Students may use the studio only during their scheduled class time and the designated five (5) hours of open studio time each Saturday. Please do not enter the studio at other times to check on or retrieve work.

Cleaning and Shared Responsibility

The ceramic studio is a shared creative space. Each student is responsible for cleaning any tools, equipment, or surfaces used during class. This includes, but is not limited to, tables, stools, boards, glazing tools, wheels, sponges, countertops, and glazing areas. Please leave the studio as you would wish to find it—clean, organized, and ready for the next artist.

Storage Space

Each student is provided one (1) shelf or cubby for the duration of the six-week session. This space is for storing clay, tools, and works in progress. Students enrolled in two sessions receive two storage spaces. Please keep your area tidy and use only the space allotted to you.

Clay and Materials

Each session includes 25 pounds of mid-fire stoneware clay, which should be picked up during the first class session. This ensures accurate distribution and prevents confusion later in the term. If you wish to use outside materials (clay, glazes, stains, etc.), they must be approved in advance by your instructor. An up-to-date MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) must be provided for any external material used in the studio.

Equipment and Safety

Handle all studio tools and equipment with care. Misuse of wheels, kilns, slab rollers, plaster forms, or glazing materials will not be tolerated. Always follow the safety instructions provided by your instructor to protect yourself and others. Respect for the equipment ensures a safe and creative learning environment for everyone.

Sharing Studio Resources

Studio tools, wheels, and materials are shared among all participants. Please take turns respectfully and avoid monopolizing equipment. If students are unable to share appropriately, access to certain tools may be limited or revoked.

Food and Beverages

For your safety, food is not permitted in the studio. Clay, glaze, and related materials can contain substances that are unsafe for consumption. Drinks with lids are permitted, but please keep them away from work areas.

Instructor Authority

Instructors reserve the right to modify or add studio guidelines as needed to ensure the safety, functionality, and success of the class environment.
