Beyond the Jig: Shannon Joyce Cerulli' '14 Leaps into Entrepreneurship & Empowering Youth
From the rolling hills of Misericordia University's campus to the rhythmic floors of Joyce School of Irish Dance, the story of Shannon Joy Cerulli '14 story is one full of inspiration, grace, and profound positivity.
Shannon's path wasn't a straight line but exemplified how education and passion can be molded together to create a beautiful and meaningful career. A 2014 graduate from the Government Law and National Security program, now recognized as Political Science at Misericordia, Shannon navigated through roles in child advocacy and social services while still holding tight to her deep love of Irish dance.
In March 2021, a long-time student, Shannon, took over the dance school from her retiring teacher, bringing a fresh perspective to the teaching style of Irish dance. From the beginning of her academic and career journey, her passion for helping others, especially children, remained consistent through the ebbs and flows. Rather than focusing on competition, she keeps personal growth and cultural appreciation at the center — a philosophy deeply influenced by Misericordia's core values of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality.
Her time at Misericordia proved transformative beyond academics. There, she met her future husband, James Cerulli '13, participated in service work, and developed the leadership skills that now influence her instruction style. These foundational experiences, combined with her experience in child advocacy and social services and the birth of her daughter, Ella, infuse her teaching with remarkable depth and compassion.
Looking into the future, Shannon dreams of introducing Irish dance to more people and strengthening her school's connection with the community. Throughout her professional journey, she has remained true to fostering a positive, welcoming environment where students can flourish and learn, combining her passion for dance with her dedication to serving others.
Shannon's story reminds us that our most fulfilling paths emerge when we blend our deepest passions with our highest values — creating something that truly makes the world dance.
