Education, Family, and a Nontraditional Road to City Leadership
 

From the heart of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, George C. Brown has proudly served as its mayor since January 6, 2020. This city is not just where he works; it’s his home, woven into the very fabric of his and his family’s lives.

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Mayor Brown’s roots run deep. He is a product of the valley, riverside landscapes, and diverse communities that make up this city. He and his wife, Marianne, who have enjoyed fifty wonderful years together, met while attending the former E.L. Meyers High School. Together, they raised their three children — Heather, Aimee, and Chris — in the same city that once raised them. Now, as proud grandparents of five, the Browns continue to grow, further enriching the legacy of their beloved hometown.

Mayor Brown has coined his academic journey as “nontraditional. " He worked full-time as a businessman and later as a councilman while supporting his family and pursuing higher education. After many years of long evening classes, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from King's College in 1997 and a Master of Science in Organizational Management with a specialization in Human Resources from Misericordia University in 2007.

Since being elected mayor in 2020 and later reelected for a second term in November 2023, Brown has dedicated himself to enhancing public safety, promoting business development, and celebrating the city's cultural diversity. In March 2024, he launched a new initiative to educate the community about health matters, particularly one close to his heart. The mayor announced that Wilkes-Barre would partner with local physicians from Geisinger and Commonwealth Health and educational institutions, including his alma mater, Misericordia University, to host "Aimee's Story: A Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program." This event provided a platform for Brown’s daughter, Aimee, to share her journey of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 44. It also featured a panel discussion aimed at raising awareness about the disease.

As we enter March 2025, a year after the launch of “Aimee’s Story,” what is Mayor George Brown up to now? Over the past month, he recognized three Department of Public Works employees for their quick response in assisting a child during inclement weather. Additionally, the city’s K-9 Unit received a donation from the Wilkes-Barre City Crime Watch.

Through his nontraditional journey from local businessman to beloved mayor, George Brown embodies the spirit of Wilkes-Barre itself — resilient, family-oriented, and dedicated to creating a community where future generations can thrive just as he and his family have.

Aimee's Story: A Colorectal Cancer Program 

On March 20, 2024, the City of Wilkes-Barre partnered with local higher ed institutions, hospitals, and medical professionals to host Aimee's Story: A Colorectal Cancer Program. Aimee Kearney, Mayor Brown's daughter, shared her journey from being diagnosed with colorectal cancer to her treatments to being declared cancer-free. The purpose of the evening was to inform others on the signs of colorectal cancer and the importance of screenings. 

Misericordia University is proud to have produced the video for Aimee's Story. Mayor Brown credits Jim Roberts, Chief of Staff, and Alicia Stavitzski, Social Media Marketing Strategist, for their significant contributions for making the video possible.
