Among the highlights of the evening is the awarding of the Trustee Associates Award. Considered among Misericordia’s highest honors, the Trustee Associates Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptionally loyal commitment, dedication, and service to the University. It is a competitive award and great care is taken by the Board of Trustees in making the prestigious selection.

CENTENNIAL TRUSTEE ASSOCIATES GALA
Held during Mercy Week and just days after Misericordia’s 100th anniversary on September 24, 2024,the special Centennial Trustee Associates Gala honored the Sisters of Mercy, and those who have followed in their footsteps. Teresa Bednarz, RSM, Ph.D., a member of the Institute Leadership Team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, offered her congratulations to Misericordia on behalf of sisters serving Catherine McAuley’s mission around the world.

Misericordia University presented the 2024 Trustee Associates Award to President Emeritus Dr. Michael A. MacDowell and Mrs. Tina MacDowell, of Harveys Lake, and Estero, Florida, honoring them as among those who have had the most impact on the university in its 100-year history. The two were recognized for the extraordinary advancements at the university during Dr. MacDowell’s 15-year tenure as president from 1998-2013. Dr. MacDowell was credited with overseeing unprecedented growth in student enrollment, student quality, athletics, and academic programming, resulting in the college’s evolution to a university in 2007. Tina MacDowell was recognized for spearheading numerous events, art installations, and outdoor beautification projects across the campus. The two were named honorary alumni in 2019, and hold lifetime honorary associate status for being among the top living donors to Misericordia.
Founders Medal
Also frequently awarded during the Trustee Associates Gala is the prestigious Founders Medal.
The Founders Medal recognizes those select individuals who have made a philanthropic investment that significantly transforms Misericordia University’s ability to serve its students and advance its mission. It is awarded on occasion by determination of the Board of Trustees.
Wilkes-Barre native Virginia “Ginger” Donlin Emershaw ’62, of Akron, Ohio, was awarded in absentia the Founders Medal during the 2024 Centennial Trustee Associates Gala. The lifelong elementary teacher established the Virginia Donlin’62 Scholarship in 2018 in support of students in the Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program or majoring in education at Misericordia. She has subsequently made a substantial gift in support of the Misericordia Fund/Immediate Impact and the General Scholarship fund.

The Misericordia Mercy Mission Medal recognizes an awardee for a lifetime of commitment, dedication and service to Misericordia, and exemplifies their willingness to share their expertise and treasure to advance the University’s mission and core values. It is awarded at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.
The 2024 Mercy Mission Medal was presented at the Centennial Gala to Trustee Emeritus Sandy, Insalaco, Sr., of Pittston. The award honored his 26 years as a dedicated member of the Misericordia Board of Trustees, and his willingness to share expertise and treasure to advance the university’s mission and core values. He was recognized for his impact that includes the development of the Insalaco Career Center on campus and providing a substantial gift that led to the construction of Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall in 2009. His leadership as campaign co-chair for Now for Tomorrow: The Campaign for Misericordia University, which concluded in 2021, resulted in the university raising $39 million in support of the construction of the Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Science Center.
