The Business Administration Major permits students to freely fashion their study to meet their professional and personal needs. The curriculum contains sufficient flexibility to meet most needs and expectations of the students, both those who intend to go on to graduate school and those who see immediate entrance into the profession.

ExpressWay Accelerated Degree

You can earn your Bachelor of Science in as little as 2 1/2 years by attending classes part-time. The convenient and predictable schedule allows you take classes either once a week or online up to 12 credits per semester. Courses are offered face-to-face in 5-week sessions at Luzerne County Community College on the Nanticoke Campus, or online in 7 1/2 week sessions.

The Business Professionals Association (BPA) at Misericordia aims to prepare students for successful careers as business professionals while fostering a strong, global network of MU business graduates. Sigma Beta Delta

The mission of Sigma Beta Delta is to encourage and recognize scholarship and accomplishment among students of business, management, and administration, and to encourage and promote aspirations toward personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind. Sigma Beta Delta was established to honor students who have attained superior records in business programs in colleges and universities with regional accreditation.

Membership in Sigma Beta Delta is the highest national recognition a business student can receive at a college or university with a Sigma Beta Delta chapter. To be eligible for membership, a business student must rank in the top 20 percent of the junior, senior or graduate class and be invited to membership by the faculty officers. The one-time induction provides lifetime membership in the Honor Society

What is Business Administration?

Business administration majors study how a business operates. They learn business principles while strengthening their leadership skills and choose from a variety of disciplines that allows them to pursue a range of careers. Business administration majors learn the mechanics of business through classes in fundamental areas such as finance, accounting and marketing, with the chance to delve into more specialized topics. Students find ways to solve problems using data, and they develop communication and managerial skills. Business administration majors also study the ethical aspects of business decisions.

Business careers are wide-ranging, but the median annual wage for those seeking employment in business operations was $72,250 in 2020 and employment of these professionals is projected to grow at an average rate of 5% from 2020 to 2029 (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Most recent data suggests that the business department is performing well in developing among its students high academic performance, recognition of the need for continuing professional development and imbuing on all, strong employability characteristics:

In May 2011, 42 undergraduate business students and 13 graduate business students were inducted into the international business honorary society Sigma Beta Delta.

Throughout the course of 2010-2011, approximately 75 percent of business students participated in or assumed leadership roles in advanced business internships, sales training, entrepreneurship, service learning, on-campus professional event management and numerous other professional opportunities.

Surveys of graduating seniors in business continue to indicate that
- 90 percent rate their experience as good-excellent
- 94 percent rate the quality of instruction by business faculty as good-excellent
- 97 percent were satisfied with opportunities to interact with faculty in/out of class

Annual surveys of business students six months after graduation continue to show that more than 97 percent have found jobs related to their majors

The Business Department continues to develop a comprehensive assessment of its business core curriculum. These reviews and recommendations for changes will be brought up for approval in 2012 and will be reflected in the revised university catalog of 2013. Assessment standards also are being revised and implemented accordingly. All business major curricula will be reassessed in light of changed expectations of the business core. These efforts are expected to last through late 2012 and will be reflected in the university catalog for 2013.

The MBA 5th-Year program is for eligible rising Misericordia University seniors who wish to begin their graduate business studies as an undergraduate student. Accepted students will take up to 12 MBA credits within their current program. An applicant may be required to complete leveling courses in business functional areas through Peregrine. The graduate admissions committee will determine if the leveling courses will be taken concurrently with MBA courses or completed prior to starting the MBA program.

MBA 5th Year Admission Requirements

At the end of the junior year, students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher (if applying for the MBA 5th Year program).
Current juniors must submit a free online part-time graduate application at www.misericordia.edu/apply for the MBA program for the first graduate semester after which the bachelor's degree will be conferred.
Following the application evaluation by the Admissions Acceptance Committee, an acceptance decision will be rendered. If positive, then a conditional acceptance letter will be issued stipulating that the student must earn a 3.0 in each MBA course and in his/her bachelor's degree to be fully accepted upon graduation.
The acceptance letter will stipulate that the student is now eligible within his/her senior year to take up to 12 MBA credits.
Accepted students will work with his/her academic advisor as an undergraduate student to select appropriate MBA courses for the upcoming semester. Selected courses will be communicated to the Graduate Admissions representative so that the registration request can be submitted to the Registrar's office for processing.
After meeting all stated requirements and successfully earning his/her bachelor's degree, the student will work directly with the Graduate Admissions representative for the graduate business programs for his/her initial graduate semester advisement and registration. Once the student has been registered for the first graduate semester, a graduate academic advisor will be assigned to the student for future advisement.
An applicant may be required to complete leveling courses in business functional areas through Peregrine. The graduate admissions committee will determine if the leveling courses will be taken concurrently with MBA courses or completed prior to starting the MBA program.
