The Other Side of Memory: Photographs by Luis C. Garza
September 21 - January 10, 2025
The Other Side of Memory: Photographs by Luis C. Garza features 66 silver gelatin photographs selected from a largely unpublished personal archive. The 81-year-old photographer is perhaps best known for his work documenting the Chicano civil rights movement in Southern California and his work in co-curating the blockbuster LA RAZA exhibition at The Autry as part of The Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.
Garza is the rare Chicano photographer who documented activism on both coasts, and internationally, during the 1960s and 1970s. He also documented his South Bronx neighborhood ("a Chicano in New
York??!!" is something he often exclaims!), New York-based demonstrations on women's rights and by the Young Lords Party to empower Puerto Ricans and other colonized people, and his 1971 travels to Eastern Europe for the World Peace Conference where he met renowned Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Meet the Artist, Tuesday, November 12, 2024, 5:30pm
The public is invited to meet Garza at a free reception on Tuesday, November 12, at 5:30pm at the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery. There will be a viewing of the yet unreleased documentary short film “Razón de Ser” (13 minutes), followed by a conversation with Garza and director Alessandro Gentile. Light refreshments served.
