Individual Counseling

Trained counselors are available to work with you personally to help you work through a variety of concerns and learn new coping strategies. The therapeutic process is collaborative, as you and your counselor will discuss your goals for treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
At your first visit, called the intake session, you will be presented with our standard forms to complete prior to meeting with an intake counselor. These forms contain questions to help us better understand your current concerns and history of symptoms.
After completing the forms, the intake counselor will review your responses, meet with you to discuss your concerns, and collaboratively explore how counseling or other services can best help you. These services may include individual, couples, or group counseling at the CAPS Center as well as possibly a referral to other on-campus or off-campus services that may be appropriate to support your needs. The intake appointment typically lasts 90 minutes (completing intake forms plus meeting with a counselor).

Ongoing Appointments
If you and your counselor agree that continuing with counseling services could be helpful after the intake session, further counseling sessions are typically scheduled 2 weeks apart. Due to scheduling limitations or conflicts, your ongoing counselor may or may not be the same person you met with during your intake session. Counseling sessions typically last 45 - 55 minutes.

Scheduling an Intake Appointment
Counseling appointments may be made anytime online:

Alternatively, students may contact us (caps@misericordia.edu or 570-674-6408) or visit the CAPS Center, located on the lower level of McGowan Hall, to schedule an appointment during normal business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.).

Rescheduling or Canceling an Appointment
Although attending counseling sessions is important to support meaningful change, if you must miss a session, please contact your counselor or the CAPS Center (caps@misericordia.edu or 570-674-6408) as far in advance as possible.
