Centennial Poem Winners
1st Place - Eleanor Pitcher
Mulier Fortis
It was 1924
And she started as one
Woman, idea, and act.
She wanted nothing more
Than to stand for everyone,
And greed she lacked.
Willing to go to any length,
She procured aid and knowledge.
And with her goodness and strength,
Her legacy gave way to a college.
Far from Ireland, this one landed,
Within the heart of hills and trees.
Mercy, the students commanded.
Justice, they served with ease.
It was for the sisters then,
But this school is for all now.
We study, play, and study again.
We uphold her ideals like a vow.
Holding a door, sharing a meal,
The arch, statues, and fields,
Giving, serving, learning to heal,
The mountains like our shields.
Oh, Catherine, it is 2024!
One hundred years we’ve had
To provide, care, and advocate.
And here’s to one hundred more
While our faces show we’re glad
To uphold a legacy so great.
2nd Place - Matthew McCaffery

100 years is not to be overlooked,
A world war, a global pandemic, Misericordia has seen it all.
The first 50 was only females, but togetherness overtook,
Yes, even through 100 years, the arch still stands tall.
Surrounded by cemeteries, but the campus could not be more alive,
The four charisms shape every student and faculty individually.
Living in the sisters of mercy’s honor we strive,
We will continue to hold the door open for those behind us, not matter how far, diligently.
