Important News Regarding Winter 2020 Commencement
Updated: October 8, 2020
Winter 2020 Commencement is planned to be a time where we celebrate our May, August, and December graduates. Sadly, it was impossible to do an in person graduation in May with the mandatory health and safety regulations in place at that time. We have received many requests for an on campus experience so richly deserved by our graduates; however, most of those of those on campus models greatly exceed the allowed size for safe gatherings. We had hoped this would be different as time passed. The commencement committee, after reviewing multiple options and soliciting feedback from graduates and prospective graduates, has set a plan for several drive-through, on-campus ceremonies on the weekend of December 19-20. Details are still being worked out.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania announced new guidelines for indoor, in-person gatherings that expand on the number of people allowed in arena type venues. This expansion allows for 15-20% capacity maximums depending on the seating capacity of the venue. This change still will not allow MU do to a “normal” commencement since our ceremonies usually have 2,000 or more in attendance. The committee is currently reviewing this recent change and evaluating how it might impact our plans for Winter 2020. Watch this space and your email for updates in the coming weeks. The easing of these restrictions is also likely subject to change based on pandemic conditions at the time of the event.
