Credentials
The programs provide the students the ability to apply for national certification examinations offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The faculty prepare students for the Sonography Physics and Instrumentation (SPI) examination, the Abdomen specialty examination and the Obstetrics and Gynecology examination.
Employment
Growing Field (Employment projected to grow 19% from 2018 to 2028 according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) 94%-100% Misericordia DMS graduates report employment and/or continued education within the first six months of completion.
- The demand for sonographers is expected to continue and grow. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, the job outlook is anticipating an increase in job opportunities of 39% by 2022.
- The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks diagnostic medical sonographers as the sixth fastest growing occupation in the country through 2022. Furthermore, the projected 10-year growth rate for the occupation in Pennsylvania is far above the state average at 36 percent, according to Hanover Research, which was retained by Misericordia University to gauge academic program’s market viability.
Outcomes
Our CAAHEP accredited program strives consistently to not only achieve the minimum standards for outcomes set forth by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS), but we strive to far exceed the minimum. The JRC-DMS reviews programs’ outcomes annually and also will review the outcome information across three years to look for trends.
