Campus Activities
The English department at Misericordia University has a very active chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English Honor Society.
The department edits a literary magazine Instress: Journal of the Arts, which is published yearly and includes original poetry, prose, and photography.
Many of our students are also involved with The Highlander, a student-run newspaper that has won several Keystone Press awards, or the Misericordia Players, a student theatre group that puts on a play each semester.
Scholarships
The Mary McDermott Klatt '54 Memorial Scholarship: An endowed four year scholarship awarded to an entering English major each year, in memory of Mary McDermott Klatt, who was an English major at Misericordia.
The David M. Payne Sr. Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a junior or senior English or English education major who demonstrates financial need.
The Josephine Olash Lecnar '39 Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student majoring in secondary education with preference given to a student who plans to teach English and literature.
Internships
Off-campus internships provide valuable practical experience in media, law, and other areas, as well as contacts with professionals in the field. The English Department has established good relationships with local media outlets and other businesses. These outlets include two daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, several local radio stations and public relations offices, and local TV affiliates for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS. Internships are available for students in English/Pre-Law at local law offices and at the offices of the County Courthouse. Recently, students have held internships with the following organizations: Don Mazella Communications, Pagitica Magazine, Frontier Communications, iGourmet, Steamtown Historical Site, The Institute for Public Policy, Harding House Publishers, and Glitter Groupe Media.
Study Abroad
ENG 216: Italy in Literature and Film is a four-week summer program held every two years in Florence, Italy. Students live in apartments in the heart of the old city, shop in local markets and prepare meals for themselves, and travel extensively in Tuscany.
For students interested in graduate study abroad, the English department offers the unique BA to MA program with the University of Reading in the UK.

Research and Conferences
Students in English have a variety of opportunities to engage in literary research and scholarship. English students have participated in MU's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program, been awarded Student Research Grants, and, via our membership in Sigma Tau Delta (the English Honor Society), presented at the organization's regional conference and been published in their journal. In conjunction with Department faculty, students have presented at regional, national, and international conferences; these include the meeting of the Group for Early Modern Cultural Studies (GEMCS), Moravian College's Undergraduate Conference in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, the annual Elizabeth Madox Roberts Conference, and the International Hemingway Conference.

Briana Scorey '19
“Paris est une fête” was this year’s theme for the International Hemingway Conference in Paris—and it sure was a moveable feast for our little group that brought Misericordia across the Atlantic for great experiences, both academic and cultural. Every moment of our time in Paris brought new and exciting things for myself and my friends, and we are still amazed to have had the opportunity to learn in such a breathtaking place.
B.A. to M.A. in English
The BA to MA in English is a five-year program in which students complete a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Misericordia and a one-year Master of Arts degree in English Language and Literature at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. Students choose from the following specializations: a Master's degree in English, with tracks in Renaissance, Victorian, or Modern and Contemporary Literature; a Master's degree in Children's Literature; or a Master's degree in Samuel Beckett: Archive, Text, and Performance.
