Program Overview

As climate change threatens to render large areas of the planet uninhabitable, environmental issues are becoming critically important to humanity. The Environmental Studies Program is a broad major that helps students develop and apply multiple perspectives in the sciences and humanities to analyze and respond to environmental situations in ways that promote the health and sustainability of the living world.

What makes Misericordia's Environmental Studies Program stand out from all the rest:
This program will offer students a thorough integration of humanistic inquiry and environmental science, promoting a deeper understanding of the environment. Environmental Studies will provide: a thorough interdisciplinary curriculum, diverse career opportunities, hands-on research, team-taught classes, fieldwork opportunities, and different track options. With 8 free electives, the B.A. in Environmental Studies is easy to combine with other majors and/or minors, and is transfer friendly!

Program degree options:

  • Environmental Science Track
  • Standard Track available as Pre-Law and Pre-DPT
  • Environmental Studies Minor

Curriculum:
a New four-course interdisciplinary Environmental Studies course sequence forms the backbone of the major:

  • ENV 100: Environment and Society
  • ENV 200: Issues in Sustainability
  • ENV 300: Environmental Research Design
  • ENV 400: Senior Capstone

An Independent research option is included, along with a series of new upper-level Environmental Studies electives.

Research/Fieldwork opportunities available to students:
By participating in fieldwork, students will gain hands-on experience by working with regional partners and local farms, and have opportunities to work on independent research with a faculty mentor.

Alumna will have Career Opportunities to achieve employment in:

  • Environmental policy, planning, and management
  • Environmental advocacy
  • Middle and secondary education
