VA Education and Training Benefits

Misericordia University is thankful for all who have served in the armed forces.  We are happy to work with you once you have been accepted to Misericordia and have applied to VA for the education and training benefits you have earned. VA education benefits help Veterans, service members, and their qualified family members with needs like paying college tuition, finding the right school or training program, and getting career counseling. Learn how to apply for and manage the education and training benefits you’ve earned

How to Apply for VA Benefits

Once you have received your Certificate of Eligibility (COE), please submit to Misericordia's SCO.

Veteran Benefits Request Form (VBRF)

The VA requires that MU receives affirmation from VA recipients for each semester that they want to use their benefit by submitting the VBRF.  Download and complete the form below and return to the SCO each semester you wish to utilize your VA benefits:

Most VA benefits are paid directly to the student, therefore the student is responsible for payment of any balance owed to Misericordia.  The exceptions for benefits paid directly to the school are:  Chapter 33 (if 100% eligibility), Fry Scholarship, and Chapter 31.  In the case of these three benefits, students are still responsible for payment of charges such as but not limited to housing, food and parking.Verifying your Enrollment with the VAStudents receiving VA Benefits may be required to verify their enrollment with the VA on a monthly basis.

Enrollment verification is a requirement for students receiving Post-9/11 GI Bill® or Montgomery GI Bill® benefits. Students are required to verify that they have remained enrolled in the same courses or training each month. In cases where students receive Monthly Housing Allowance/kicker payments, they will have their payments withheld if they fail to verify or report that they are no longer enrolled in their courses or training. To streamline the process, VA is providing the options to verify enrollment easily and securely via text message, email, and online at VA.gov.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Misericordia University takes great pride in our involvement and generous support of the Yellow Ribbon Program, aimed at alleviating the financial burden for eligible students. This initiative assists in covering the difference between the annual cap of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and the remaining tuition and fees. Through this program, undergraduate students can receive up to an additional $5,000 per academic year towards their remaining tuition and fees. Graduate students can receive up to $6,500 and Doctoral students can receive up to $10,000. The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.

Who is eligible?

Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Individuals may be eligible if they:

  • Served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months.
  • Were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and they served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001.
  • Are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
  • Are receiving 100% Chapter 33 Benefits

How does the program work?

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition. The student’s tuition and fees may exceed that amount if they are attending a private institution, graduate school or an out-of-state school. If they are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition, additional funds may be available for their education program without an additional charge to their entitlement.

  • Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with VA choose the amount of tuition and fees that will be contributed. VA will match that amount and issue payment directly to the institution. (MU- Undergraduate $5,000, Graduate $6,500, Doctoral $10,000).
  • Benefits are payable for training pursued on or after Aug. 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.
