WHO IS THIS VIRTUAL COURSE FOR?

Professionals who use spatial data: Learn how to understand, use, and analyze spatial data in your field, as well as communicate your findings to a wider audience. Whether you are a business owner, healthcare manager, environmental professional, interested in political trends or in education, GIS, or geographic information systems, is a valuable and powerful tool for understanding our world. You do not need to be proficient in any specific software or programming to take this course, just a willingness to learn and comfort using technology.

ABOUT GIS BASICS

A growing amount of data in nearly every field means that we need to be equipped to better understand, use, and communicate the information generated from these data. Many of these data are spatial in nature and are used to make decisions about everything from where to build a new business franchise, open a health clinic, or create a nature preserve. Having a sense of spatial data can help you with your professional questions as you better understand the populations and communities that you serve. By the end of the course, you will be able to apply your knowledge to your specific field through case studies. With this knowledge, you can immediately apply your new skills to problems in your profession. You also have the option to continue more specific training using resources you will learn about in this course. Finally, students will have an opportunity to present their new knowledge to their classmates and describe how they will apply their skills to their fields throughout the course.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE

  • Learn how to use powerful tools to understand and analyze spatial data in your field
  • Develop skills in data management and queries that are used with any type of data
  • Use maps to communicate problems – and solutions!
