Apprenticeship Program at Misericordia University Empowers Special Ed Paraprofessionals to Become Certified Teachers
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University, in partnership with the Luzerne Intermediate Unit (LIU), is proud to announce the launch of the Special Education (PK-12) Teacher Certification Apprenticeship Program. This innovative initiative, which has gained approval from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is designed to address Pennsylvania's teacher shortage by providing a pathway to certification for paraprofessionals and others already serving in education roles.
The program begins with an application to the LIU18 Paraeducator Associate to Bachelor’s/Certification Program. LIU18 coursework can be completed in one year, with courses running in seven-week sessions. After completing their LIU18 coursework, students will transition to Misericordia University to complete the remaining credits required for certification. Misericordia is eligible to participate in Title IV financial aid programs through the U.S. Department of Education, where eligible students may qualify for financial aid to help finance their education.
The program is tailored for adult learners, enabling participants to "earn while they learn" through a flexible, apprenticeship-based model. By combining coursework, expert mentorship, and on-the-job experience, this program prepares candidates for Instructional I certification in Special Education (PK-12).
“Misericordia has a long history of preparing caring and effective teachers,” said Colleen Duffy, chair of Misericordia’s Teacher Education Department. “We are excited to create a new pathway into the teaching profession for adult learners who are already serving students in Pennsylvania.”
Participants in the program will benefit from Misericordia University’s rigorous academic framework and a supportive learning environment. The program is designed to help educators meet the unique needs of special education students across the state while continuing their professional roles in schools.
