Community Celebrates Cultural Heritage at Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshops
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University welcomed students, faculty, staff, and community members to two free egg decorating workshops held April 4-5 in the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery. Led by local artist Marianne Bump Lurie, the sessions introduced participants to the Ukrainian art of pysanky—a centuries-old tradition historically practiced by women.
The first session, "Old World 'Tear Drop' Style Easter Eggs," taught attendees the "drop-pull" technique using melted beeswax and styluses to craft delicate, symmetrical patterns. On Saturday, the beginner-friendly workshop guided participants through the batik-style method, blending hands-on instruction with stories, legends, and symbolism behind the folk art.
The event fostered creativity, cultural appreciation, and community connection, as guests explored a rich tradition that celebrates both artistic expression and women's contributions throughout history. Support for the program was provided in part by a Creative Sector Flex Fund Grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, administered regionally by The Armature.
