Integrated Studies Builds Confidence and Community at Misericordia University

DALLAS, Pa. – Misericordia University’s Integrated Studies Program continues to empower students with intellectual disabilities through an inclusive college experience that blends academics, social development, and career readiness.

Designed to promote independence and personal growth, the program allows students to take college-level courses, participate in campus life, gain work experience, and build essential life skills—all with the support of dedicated faculty and peer coaches.

“One of the greatest benefits I have witnessed in my short time as a manager has been students’ growth in self-determination and self-advocacy,” said Orley A. Templeton, OTD, OTR/L, CAS, Integrated Studies Manager. “Through the transition to higher education, students have gained a sense of ownership over their lives and become the driver of their future. It has been wonderful to see the transition from a student relying on their family to make decisions to that where they are in the driver seat and they view their family and community as the support network to help them achieve their goals.”

For families like Kathy Callaghan’s, the program has exceeded expectations.

“My grandson Roger had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Integrated Studies at Misericordia University. When he began the program, it was a big adjustment for him, but Dr. Templeton and her amazing team patiently provided support and guidance. Soon he absolutely loved his coaches—they became friends. This was something his prior education lacked, and it paved the way for an amazing experience. Through the process of college-level academics and life skills, he grew as a person. He had the opportunity for work study, which gave him responsibility. He had fun, he had friends! Roger grew as a person, with confidence. The combination of academics, life skills, love, and support from Dr. Templeton and the coaches was amazing—more than we could have ever expected!”
