Misericordia Launches New Sociology Major to Address Growing Demand for Social Sciences

DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University has announced the addition of a new Bachelor of Arts in sociology program, launching fall 2025, through its College of Arts and Sciences.

The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the scientific study of social life, social change, and the causes and consequences of human behavior. Grounded in both liberal arts and scientific methodology, the curriculum emphasizes analytical, critical thinking, and research skills — preparing graduates for a wide array of careers including human resources, public policy, social services, law and business, or further graduate study.

The new major includes eight required courses in sociology and research methods, along with six electives chosen from a list that includes offerings in criminology, political science and environmental studies.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of sociologists is projected to grow 7% from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations, reflecting a growing demand for data-driven and socially informed decision-making in today's workforce.

The addition of the sociology major also supports existing programs in criminology and social work, where several sociology courses are already embedded in the curriculum.
