Misericordia Sonography Faculty Member Leads Students on International Medical Mission to the Dominican Republic
DALLAS, PA - Karen Klimas, MS, RT, RDMS, a dedicated faculty member in Misericordia University's Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, recently led a team of students on a life-changing volunteer mission to Santiago, Dominican Republic. Participating in the ILAC (Institute for Latin American Concern) medical outreach initiative, Klimas and her team provided critical sonography services to underserved populations over a five-day period in March 2025.
Klimas was joined by three senior sonography students, and together they performed approximately 100 ultrasound exams, including abdominal, renal, pelvic, vascular, and echocardiography screenings. The group was part of a larger medical team composed of more than 80 healthcare professionals from various disciplines.
"I love to volunteer my time and skills to help the people of the Dominican Republic," said Klimas. "It also gives my students the opportunity to do the same to promote the charisms of Misericordia University, which are mercy, service, justice, and hospitality."
Now a four-time participant in the ILAC program, Klimas says she hopes to continue making the trip and inspiring students through hands-on service learning. The experience not only allowed students to grow their clinical expertise but also empowered them to step outside their comfort zones in the spirit of compassion and global service.
