Misericordia Sport Management Association Participates in Professional Development Trip to Arizona

DALLAS, PA - The Misericordia University Sport Management Association (SMA) recently traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, for an immersive professional development experience that provided students with hands-on learning opportunities at some of the nation’s premier sports and entertainment venues. The highlight of the trip was volunteering at the College Football Playoff Semifinal Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, one of college football’s most prominent postseason events.

The trip blended meaningful career development with memorable recreational experiences. While in Arizona, students connected with Misericordia alumnus Austin Zawicki of the Fiesta Sports Foundation, who shared insights into his career path and professional growth within the sport industry. The group also toured the Fiesta Bowl Museum, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at the history and operations of one of college football’s most storied bowl games.

Students further expanded their professional network through a visit with representatives from Oak View Group, who provided an in-depth tour of Arizona State University’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities and discussed opportunities within sports and venue management.

The centerpiece of the trip occurred at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, where SMA students served as volunteer leads for Guest Services and Information Centers during the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Students played a critical role in directing fans and guests throughout game day ancillary events, offering real-world exposure to large-scale event operations in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

In addition to their professional experiences, students attended an NBA matchup between the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns and toured Chase Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks, further broadening their understanding of professional sports venues and operations.

Through these diverse experiences, Misericordia SMA students gained practical industry knowledge, built meaningful professional connections, and developed skills essential for future careers in sport management.
