Misericordia Students Spend Spring Break Volunteering at Kiptopeke State Park

DALLAS, Pa. –  Instead of heading to the beach or home for rest, a group of Misericordia University students spent their spring break in March volunteering at Kiptopeke State Park in Virginia through the American Hiking Society’s Alternative Break program.

The students worked alongside park staff to repair trails, construct a bridge to improve access across boggy terrain, and complete other maintenance projects that will benefit visitors for years to come. The bridge, sturdy enough to support supply vehicles, became both a practical solution and a symbol of the teamwork and problem-solving skills the group developed together.

“Working outdoors with great people for a common good was a great experience,” one student said. “We worked until our bodies hurt and then got up to do it again. We learned that we could do hard things.”

Beyond the physical labor, students shared that the week was an opportunity to form meaningful friendships, reflect on their personal growth, and gain a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship. Evenings brought campfires, star-filled skies, and a sense of accomplishment that underscored the theme of the week: building bridges — literally and figuratively.

The Alternative Break program, coordinated by the American Hiking Society, pairs college students with public lands across the country. By contributing time and energy to trail conservation, students not only strengthen park infrastructure but also build lasting connections with each other and the communities they serve.

“This trip was full of meaningful moments,” another student reflected. “It reminded us that giving back is just as rewarding as it is challenging.”
