Misericordia University is offering rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to experience and learn more about exciting professions and residential life on a college campus in a series of seven Career Exploration Camps this summer. The university offers academic camps in biology and chemistry-biochemistry, entrepreneurship, occupational therapy, literature, physical therapy and diversity, speech-language pathology, and teacher education. Space is limited in each camp, so registration is necessary.
Misericordia's Biology and Chemistry/Biochemistry departments invite students to explore careers in the biological and chemical sciences from June 23-25. This experience will be a three-day, two-night camp that will be available to students entering their senior year in high school. Students who are interested in learning about careers requiring a degree in biology or chemistry are strongly encouraged to attend. Students will work together on interdisciplinary projects in the areas of water quality and forensics from both a chemical and biological perspective. Students will also get to work with current faculty and students in the new Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Science Center. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
Calling all young entrepreneurs, join the College of Business Summer Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for three-days, two-nights from June 23-25. The camp is for a rising high school junior or senior with a passion for business, innovation, and a taste for success. The entrepreneurship boot camp is the ultimate opportunity to unleash entrepreneurial spirit and experience the excitement of launching a real business. This year, students will be part of the Cougar Coffee Company. From sourcing beans to designing the perfect cup, students will have a direct hand in every aspect of Cougar Coffee Company. Students will dive into entrepreneurship with practical, hands-on activities that will sharpen their business skills. They will learn from seasoned entrepreneurs and business experts who will serve as mentors. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
If you have a student interested in a healthcare career, then the four-day, three-night occupational therapy camp that runs from June 23-26 is perfect for them. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages and help them do the things they need to do and want to do every day. Participants will learn about the profession of OT and the various career paths available for OTs in settings such as hospitals outpatient centers, schools, rehabilitation facilities and the community, and the many ways in which OTs work to improve the lives of those they serve. During this camp, participants will have an opportunity to engage one-on-one and in groups with faculty, staff, and students who are currently enrolled in the Occupational Therapy program's new OT/PT Facility. The residential overnight component is part of the camp experience. Cost is $50 per camper to cover the expenses for splints and adaptive equipment, make-and-take session, engage in cooking or snack preparation as part of an occupation exploration, and for giveaways.
Literature Camp is a four-day, three-night career exploration experience being held June 23-26, where students and faculty will investigate the theme of “Heroes & Myth!” Join Misericordia English faculty as they explore this exciting topic through literature, popular culture, film, drama, and music. In addition, students will tap into their creativity as we conduct writing and theatrical workshops and professional writing exercises. Camp participants will also interact with current English majors who will serve as camp counselors. This camp is designed only for students entering the 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2024. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
Physical Therapy Camp runs from June 23-26 as a four-day, three-night residential camp offered to rising high school seniors (graduating class of 2025) interested in exploring the Physical Therapy career. Students will have the opportunity to observe Misericordia University’s on-campus clinic, gain hands-on experience in multiple laboratory settings, and gain an understanding of the PT profession. There will be a special focus will be on social determinants of health and their impact on diverse communities. Participants will work with MU PT faculty, staff and students to create a health information project over the three-day camp in the new OT/PT Facility. Transportation assistance may be available for qualifying students. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
The Speech-Language Pathology Career Exploration Camp, a four-day, three-night camp running from June 23-26, is for rising seniors. The academic camp allows students to become familiar with the many career options in the growing field of speech-language pathology. Participants tour the department’s state-of-the-art academic facilities at John J. Passan Hall, learn about the career field from guest lecturers, interact with pediatric clients, and observe live therapy sessions in the Speech-Language and Hearing Center. The cost of this camp is $125. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
Teacher Education Camp runs from June 23-25. During this three-day, two-night career exploration experience, students who will be high school juniors or seniors for the 2024-2025 school year will participate in various sessions to introduce them to the Teacher Education Department (TED) faculty. The TED faculty will facilitate interactive sessions highlighting content areas/subjects that elementary or secondary education teachers teach and showcase some cutting-edge technology the department offers to its current majors. These hands-on, interactive experiences also focus on student diversity and what it means to be an effective, student-centered teacher in the 21st century. Camp participants will also interact with current TED majors who will serve as camp counselors. There will be no cost for camp participants. The camp includes overnight accommodations.
