Misericordia University alumna set to speak at the Mercy Global Perspectives in Social Work Conference
Misericordia University alumna Sr Chioma Ahanihu, SLW, is slated to speak at the virtual Mercy Global Perspectives in Social Work Conference on March 27, 2023, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The free conference is open to all Mercy Universities for Mercy Higher Education students, faculty, and alumni with a bachelor's or master's in Social Work.
The 2nd annual collaborative Mercy Global Perspectives in Social Work Conference is hosted by universities that share the values of the Sisters of Mercy. The universities involved include Misericordia University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Carlow University, and Salve Regina. The collaboration allows students to see how social work themes are applied to the world around them and aims to highlight ethical international social work initiatives that advance global human rights and share experiences between social workers worldwide.
During this conference, Sr. Chioma will focus on her life and work in Africa. She is an Igbo woman of West African Nigerian descent and has lived in different parts of the United States for the past two decades. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Misericordia University, a master’s in social work from the Catholic University of America, and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies degree from the Catholic Theological Union (CTU) located in Chicago. Currently, she is in the Doctor of Ministry Program at CTU with a Concentration in Spirituality.
Sr. Chioma is the director of the Center of the Study of Consecrated Life at CTU, and has been engaged in different nonprofit organizations in the Social Work field as an Independent Consultant Mental Health Therapist. Before that, she ministered with Catholic Charities of Chicago Archdiocese as a Psychotherapist and Parish Social Worker.
Her primary areas of interest as a practical theology scholar, social worker, and minister are related to today’s consecrated life, reconciliation, spirituality, immigration, and racism. Sr. Chioma loves to travel and learn about other cultures and food. In her downtime, she likes to walk by the lake, bike, garden, and sew her own clothing.
Along with Sr. Choima, other speakers include Ronald Caballero, to speak on the country of Bolivia, and Milton Bianas, to speak on the Pine Ridge Reservation located in Wyoming, USA. Continuing Education Credits are available.
