Misericordia University Celebrates Inaugural Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Class with Capstone Conclave

DALLAS, Pa. – Misericordia University marked a historic milestone in its more than 40-year legacy of excellence in occupational therapy education as the inaugural class of the Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral (ELOTD) Program completed their studies in August 2025. While the graduates participated in the University’s commencement ceremony in May, their official degree conferral and program completion took place this month.

The celebration included the Doctoral Capstone Conclave on August 3, an event that recognized the achievements of the doctoral candidates as they were formally announced with the title of “doctor” for the first time in public. The ceremony, held in Lemmond Theater, featured remarks from faculty and the introduction of graduates by their mentors. Following the ceremony, the community was invited to the Occupational and Physical Therapy Building to view poster presentations showcasing the students’ research and capstone projects.

Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), the ELOTD program positions Misericordia as one of the first institutions in the region to offer this advanced entry-level degree. Designed to meet the evolving needs of the profession, the curriculum emphasizes occupation-based practice, advanced intervention strategies, scholarly writing, and specialized areas of clinical expertise. Graduates are prepared to be leaders, innovators, and advocates in diverse practice settings.

“Our first cohort of entry level doctoral graduates has exceeded expectations in every way. Their dedication, resilience, and commitment to the values of our profession—and our university—have been truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and confident in the impact they will make in the ever-changing healthcare environment and the advancement in the field of occupational therapy,” said Dr. Lori Charney, OTD, OTR/L, CAS, CLA, Chair of the Occupational Therapy Department and Director of the ELOTD Program.

Throughout the program, students engaged in rigorous academic and clinical experiences, gaining advanced knowledge in advocacy, research, leadership, and program development. Their capstone work reflected the University’s mission and founding charisms of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality—addressing real-world challenges and advancing occupational therapy practice.

The doctoral designation underscores a commitment to advancing the profession through evidence-based practice, designing and implementing programs for diverse communities, leading rehabilitation teams, and championing social justice in healthcare. As these new doctors of occupational therapy begin their careers, they carry forward a tradition of excellence and a vision for inclusive, person-centered, and innovative healthcare.
