Misericordia University Celebrates MLK Week with Events Focused on Reflection, Service, and Social Justice
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University commemorated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a week-long series of events which featured a series of thought-provoking discussions, service projects, and recognition of individuals who embody Dr. King's vision of social justice and equality.
This year's theme, "Embody the Vision: It Starts With Me," encouraged students, faculty, and staff to reflect on their role in fostering change within their communities.
The week began with "Conversations for Change: A Fireside Chat with Emerald Garner, where Garner, an advocate for social justice and daughter of the late Eric Garner, delivered a compelling message about personal responsibility in advancing Dr. King's vision. Her discussion inspired attendees to take action in addressing systemic issues and promoting equality in their daily lives.
Community service played a significant role in the week's activities. McAuley Market Donations took place throughout the week, collecting essential food and hygiene products for those in need. On Tuesday, students and faculty gathered for "Blankets & Broth," crafting blankets for local shelters and collecting cans of soup to support the community.
Academic and cultural discussions also took center stage. "Charism Conversations: Justice," an internal university dialogue, explored how the values of the Sisters of Mercy - Mercy, Service, Justice, and Hospitality - are lived out on campus. Additionally, the "Prayer for Peace" in Mercy Chapel provided a space for reflection, unity, and spiritual renewal.
The university also held an exclusive screening of Rustin (2023), a film highlighting the contributions of Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement who worked alongside Dr. King.
On Wednesday, members of United Black Brothers (UBB) led a powerful discussion in "Voices of Strength: A Panel on the Black Male Experience," addressing their perspectives of black men in society. The panel emphasized the importance of mentorship, allyship, and fostering inclusive environments that empower marginalized voices.
Later that evening, the Honorary MLK Basketball Game at the Anderson Center celebrated the power of sports in fostering unity and community support.
The highlight of the week was the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner, recognizing individuals at Misericordia who exemplify Dr. King's values through service, leadership, and advocacy.
The celebrations concluded with a community brunch at Archie's Lounge, where participants reflected on the week's events and reaffirmed their commitment to Dr. King's vision.
