Misericordia University Celebrates Spring 2025 Commencement Ceremonies
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University proudly celebrated its Spring 2025 Commencement on Saturday, May 10, conferring degrees upon undergraduate and graduate students across diverse fields of study. The ceremonies included remarks from President Daniel J. Myers, Ph.D., and featured the conferral of honorary degrees to nationally renowned guests whose work reflects the university's mission of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality.
Mary Scullion, RSM, co-founder of Project HOME and national leader in addressing homelessness and mental health advocacy, delivered the graduate commencement address and was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
Ana María Pineda, RSM, S.T.D., a distinguished theologian and advocate for Hispanic ministry, was honored with the same degree and addressed the undergraduate candidates.
During the undergraduate ceremony, the university also presented the prestigious Catherine McAuley Medal to Catherine McGroarty, RSM, for her outstanding service and lifelong dedication to the values of the Sisters of Mercy.
This year also marked a historic moment for first-generation college students at Misericordia, as the university hosted its inaugural induction ceremony for the Tri-Alpha First-Generation Honor Society. Forty students were recognized for their academic achievements as pioneers in their families pursuing higher education.
One of this year's proud first-generation graduates was Kevin Amaya of Scranton. Reflecting on the significance of the moment, he shared:
"Being a first-generation college student means being a leader and acquiring valuable knowledge through education while simultaneously creating a path for my family and friends for generations to come. I never saw myself in a college setting because nobody around me had. Misericordia gave me the opportunity—and the belief—that I could accomplish this beautiful goal. This degree is for my family, especially my father, who made a life-threatening journey to give me the opportunity to be here today."
The university community celebrated the achievements of all graduates, including the many who overcame personal and academic obstacles to reach this milestone. The ceremonies concluded with the induction of new alumni into the Misericordia University Alumni Association.
