Misericordia University DPT Students Engage in Hands-On Pediatric Therapy Labs

DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University's third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students recently participated in two engaging hands-on labs as part of their Pediatric Physical Therapy course.

These interactive sessions, the PT Sensory Integration Lab and the Toys on a Shoestring Lab, encouraged students to think creatively about therapeutic interventions for children, particularly in resource-limited environments.

In the PT Sensory Integration Lab, students explored how movement, balance, and sensory input play a crucial role in pediatric physical therapy. Through hands-on activities, they learned techniques to help children develop motor skills, improve coordination, and enhance their ability to process sensory information. This lab emphasized the importance of engaging therapy sessions that cater to a child's individual sensory needs.

The second session, Toys on a Shoestring Lab, was a collaborative effort with the Occupational Therapy Department. Students were challenged to create functional and engaging therapy toys using everyday household objects. The exercise reinforced the importance of adaptability in clinical practice, especially in community settings where children may not have access to traditional toys.

Through these labs, students not only developed a deeper understanding of sensory integration and creative problem-solving but also gained valuable insight into working with children in diverse therapy environments.
