Misericordia University Hosts Diversity Academy 2024
Over the course of the fall semester, Misericordia University hosted Diversity Academy 2024, a series of engaging events designed to foster inclusivity and promote understanding within the campus community.
The Academy began in September with a thought-provoking session titled "Mistrust vs. Miscommunication," led by Dr. Paul Porter, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This event, held in collaboration with the National Speech & Debate Association, set the tone for meaningful dialogue. Later in the month, Associate Vice President Kas Williams facilitated Safe Zone Training in partnership with Mission Integration and Institutional Diversity. The training, held at the McGowan Library, focused on creating supportive spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community.
In October, Emelyn Galvez, MSW and Professional Counselor, hosted a session titled "Bridging the Gap: Mental Health Awareness and Support in Predominantly White Institutions," in collaboration with the Counseling and Psychological Services Center. The month concluded with a Women’s Empowerment Panel organized by Aliah McPhaul, Manager of Multicultural and Inclusion Initiatives. This inspiring event, supported by Mission Integration and Institutional Diversity, celebrated the strength and achievements of women.
The Academy wrapped up in November with a virtual session titled "Navigating Microaggressions: Fostering Inclusive Spaces," led by Arthur Breese, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Employee Engagement. This insightful discussion was presented in collaboration with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Diversity Academy 2024 was proudly sponsored by The Office of Mission Integration and Institutional Diversity, reflecting Misericordia University’s ongoing commitment to equity, inclusion, and understanding within its community.
