Misericordia University Hosts Successful Distinguished Speaker Series on Apraxia and Autism
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University's Department of Speech-Language Pathology, in partnership with the Hazleton Area School District Early Intervention Program, successfully hosted its Distinguished Speaker series workshop, "Enhancing Communication Throughout the Day: Apraxia and Autism," on January 28, 2025, in Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall.
The workshop provided attendees with the latest research and clinical insights into Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Sessions focused on differential diagnosis, goal writing, and treatment strategies, incorporating real-world case studies spanning preschool through adolescence.
Featured presenters included:
Dr. Kathleen Scaler Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-SCF, a professor at Misericordia University and Board Certified Specialist in Stuttering and Fluency Disorders, who shared her expertise on fluency disorders and communication patterns in autism.
Erin Roberts, M.S., CCC-SLP, an assistant professor at Misericordia University, who provided insights into autism, neuroimaging, and the science of the mind/brain, integrating research findings into clinical practice.
The event attracted speech-language pathologists, educators, occupational therapists, paraprofessionals, social workers, students, and parents, all eager to enhance their understanding of effective communication strategies for individuals with CAS and ASD.
