Misericordia University Physical Therapy Students Promote Healthy Aging Through Community Mobility Clinic

Service-Learning Course Connects Physical Therapy Students With Older Adults at The Pines

DALLAS, Pa. — Students in Misericordia University's Aging Well: Exercise with the Older Adult elective are gaining valuable clinical experience while helping local older adults improve their mobility and overall wellness through a five-week Mobility Clinic at The Pines.

Throughout the program, physical therapy students work directly with volunteer residents, providing education, leading exercise activities, and offering individualized recommendations for safe home exercise programs.

The clinic is structured around five weekly topics that promote healthy aging and functional mobility. Students begin by conducting baseline mobility assessments before focusing on aerobic fitness, strength training, balance and coordination, and flexibility and posture. The accompanying photos highlight the balance and coordination session, where students guide participants through exercises designed to improve stability and reduce fall risk.

The initiative reflects a collaborative effort between Misericordia University's Department of Physical Therapy, the University's Mission, Ministry, and Service Office, and the residents of The Pines, who play an important role in supporting student learning through their participation. Funding from the Luzerne Foundation also helped provide additional equipment to enhance the learning experience and the quality of the clinic.

By combining classroom instruction with meaningful community engagement, the Aging Well: Exercise with the Older Adult elective prepares future physical therapists to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care while making a positive impact in the community. To learn more, click here.
