Misericordia University Welcomes Two Deans

Misericordia University is pleased to announce that James J. Pierson, CPA, J.D., has been appointed dean of the College of Business, while John Woznicki, Ph.D., has been appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

New Dean Jim J. Pierson, Dean of Business

James J. Pierson, CPA, J.D., comes to Misericordia from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was the chair, MBA program director, and assistant professor in the Business and Entrepreneurship Department. 

Possessing extensive experience in both the academic and corporate environments, he previously served for three years as the lead faculty and program chair, Undergraduate Accounting at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio.  His teaching and research interests include taxation, accounting (financial reporting), business law (consumer protection), and business sustainability.  

He served in various financial leadership roles as a chief financial officer, controller, and tax director, primarily in the engineering and construction industries. His financial leadership experience includes many years with companies with revenues more than $1 billion, both publicly traded as well as privately held companies with global operations. Pierson initially developed his technical accounting and tax skills while providing service to many industries in public accounting, where he served as a tax manager with Ernst & Young.  Prior to his business career, Pierson served on active duty in the United States Army in various roles, from private to captain.  

He is actively involved in professional organizations, serving in the American Bar Association as the co-chair of the economic justice committee in the Civil Rights & Social Justice Section, and he is a member in the Tax Section. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs, and the Pittsburgh Chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI).  

Pierson earned his B.S.B.A. in accounting and management from Youngstown State University, his M.S. in Taxation from Robert Morris University, and his J.D. in law from Duquesne University.  He is licensed as an attorney and certified public accountant in Pennsylvania and is certified as a chartered global management accountant.

Pierson will be joining Misericordia University on June 27.

New Deans Dr. John Woznicki, Dean of Arts and Science

John Woznicki, Ph.D, joins the university from his most recent post as dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where he steered the graduate programs through the pandemic and led the development of academic programs in areas such as Physician Assistant Studies and Speech Language Pathology.

He also was instrumental in building new graduate degree programs in Management and Organizational Leadership, Agribusiness, and Liberal Studies, as well as numerous graduate certificates, endorsements, and tracks of study in disciplines such as Business, Education, and Criminal Justice.

Prior to that, he was the dean of the Heavin School of Arts and Sciences at Thomas Edison State University, in Trenton, New Jersey. Dr. Woznicki has also served as provost and associate vice president of academic affairs at Union County College in Cranbury, New Jersey and head of the Division of Arts, Communications, and Humanities at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, where he was also a professor of English.

Dr. Woznicki has held faculty positions at Georgian Court University, Community College of Philadelphia, and Fairmont State University. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Lehigh University, a master's in English from the College of New Jersey, and a bachelor's in English from Worcester State University.

Dr. Woznicki is a literary critic who specializes in 20th century American literature. He has published several scholarly articles on artists ranging from Wallace Stevens to Stephen King. He is the author of the book, "Ideological Content and Political Significance in Twentieth-Century American Poetry," as well as the architect and editor of the volume, "The New American Poetry: Fifty Years Later."

Dr. Woznicki will officially join Misericordia University on July 5.
