Misericordia University Winter Commencement Set for December 18

University to Honor Sister Mary Jo McGinley, RSM, with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree

Mary Jo McGinley, RSM, will be the keynote speaker for Misericordia University's eleventh winter commencement on Sunday, December 18, at 2 p.m. in the Anderson Sports and Health Center. Commencement activities will include a baccalaureate Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Lemmond Theater on the Dallas campus. Tickets are required to attend the commencement ceremony. During the commencement ceremony, the University will confer degrees upon 326 students and present Sister Mary Jo with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Sister Mary Jo is the CEO/Executive Director of Global Health Ministry, assuming that role in January 2004. Global Health Ministry (GHM) is a nonprofit member of the Trinity Health system, one of the largest not-for-profit, Catholic health care systems in the nation.  GHM serves in partnership with in-country leaders in Latin America and the Caribbean, assisting them in their efforts to build healthier communities. To achieve its goals, GHM recruits and prepares US volunteers to serve on short-term medical and surgical missions, inviting participants to be personally transformed and embrace their role as global citizens.  In addition, GHM oversees the provision of all outpatient services for the citizens of the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific.

Sister Mary Jo has served in various administrative roles throughout her career. Before joining Global Health Ministry, she worked for 14 years with Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania, including as vice president of Ambulatory Services and System Fund Development and vice president of Administration at Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia. She served 19 years in the education ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, including as a junior high teacher, adjunct professor at Gwynedd Mercy College, elementary school principal, and Sisters of Mercy Education Supervisor with administrative oversight of 45 elementary schools along the East Coast.

During her many years of service, Sister Mary Jo earned numerous prestigious awards the Catherine McAuley Award from Eastern Mercy Health System; the Unsung Hero Award from the Baltimore Avenue Redevelopment Corporation; Recognition for Extraordinary Service as GHM’s Haiti Team Leader; the Daniel F. Russell Award for Innovative Service to Those Who Are Poor; Social Stewardship Award, Sister Mary Concilia Moran Award from the Catholic Health Association; the Anne Fitzpatrick Murray Alumni Award for distinguished community service from Gwynedd Mercy University; and the Dedicated Service Recognition Award for service to the people of the Diocese of Chulucanas, Peru.

Sister Mary Jo earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Gwynedd Mercy University, a Master of Science Degree in Education Administration from Fordham University, and a Master’s in Public Health from Yale University.
