Misericordia University's Hunger 101 Simulation Encourages Empathy and Awareness
DALLAS, PA - Misericordia University students took park in Hunger 101, an interactive simulation held in March and hosted by the Misericordia Interprofessional Educational Connection (MIPEC) and the Social Work Department. The event aimed to raise awareness about food insecurity and the challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty.
Mary Kay D'Elia, a nutrition educator from the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO), led the session by introducing attendees to the organization's mission and services. CEO's programs, including the Weinberg Food Bank, which distributes food to pantries throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, were highlighted as key efforts to fight against hunger in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.
Through the simulation, students were encouraged to consider the dynamics of poverty and food insecurity from the perspective of those experiencing it. The exercise challenged participants to identify appropriate and accessible food sources while navigating limited resources, building empathy, and a deeper understanding of the social and economic barriers many individuals face.
The mission of Misericordia's social work program is to prepare students for entry-level generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. The mission of Misericordia's Interprofessional Educational Connection is to engage students and faculty in experiences to support the collaborative team approach in professional practice.
