NASPA, the leading national organization for Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and the Adult Learners and Students with Children (ALSC) Knowledge Community, has named the Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program at Misericordia University as the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Program of 2021.
“NASPA has over 15,000 members. This award is designed to highlight the fantastic work supporting adult learners. The ALSC aims to share information with student affairs practitioners and thus improve support services while highlighting the magnificent stories of this unique student population. We feel that the Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program exemplifies how to support a growing student population that often requires a unique type of assistance. The ALSC recognizes the importance of family in the educational experience. The numerous resources provided at Misericordia University, including Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program (WCC) and other efforts provides an outstanding model that other universities can learn from”, said Dr. Anita Hicks, ALSC KC, Chair.
Established in 2000, the Bourger Women with Children Program provides housing, scholarships, and an array of support services for academically qualified, single mothers at the poverty level and their children, while they earn a bachelor’s degree. The program is one of only eight of its kind in the country and is currently under expansion to support 20 single mothers with up to three children by fall, 2021. Although priority is given to women from Luzerne, Wyoming and Lackawanna counties, student mothers from across the United States are accepted into the program.
