Study Finds Misericordia University Generates $164 Million Annual Economic Impact Across Pennsylvania

 

DALLAS, Pa. -  A newly released study by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) highlights Misericordia University as a powerful economic engine for the Commonwealth, contributing an estimated $164.4 million annually to Pennsylvania’s economy and supporting more than 1,400 jobs.

The independent analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group—a nationally recognized research firm specializing in economic impact studies—measured the University’s wide-ranging contributions, including operational spending, employee wages and benefits, capital projects, and spending by students and visitors.

According to the study, Misericordia University sustains 1,433 jobs throughout the state. This figure includes direct employment as well as indirect and induced positions created at businesses that serve and supply the University, such as hotels, restaurants, retailers, and service providers.

Nichole Parker, Managing Principal of Parker Strategy Group, notes, “There’s no question that Pennsylvania’s independent, nonprofit colleges and universities serve as vital economic drivers for their communities and help fuel the economic vitality of the Commonwealth.”

The study also estimated that the University generates approximately $13.1 million each year in tax revenues for state and local governments through sales tax, property tax, personal income tax, and corporate income tax contributions.

Highlights of Misericordia University’s estimated statewide economic impact in 2023 include:

·       $164.4 million in total economic output

·       1,433 jobs supported across Pennsylvania

·       $75.9 million in labor income generated

·       $13.1 million in tax revenues produced

The analysis utilized IMPLAN, an industry-standard economic impact modeling software, and followed best-practice methodologies tailored to higher education institutions.
