Living Philosophy Aspen Award

The aspen tree grows in large colonies, derived from a single seedling. Root sprouts extend outward over a hundred feet from the parent tree to produce new stems, new trees, new life.

While each tree can live for 150 years, the root system lasts much, much longer. In some cases, an aspen tree forest can outlast its parent tree by tens of thousands of years.

The Living Philosophy Aspen Award is given to a graduating philosophy major who has, like a single aspen tree seedling, grown and reached out to create a forest of living and enduring ideas, changing the landscape forever, and creating footpaths for future generations to walk.

The recipient of the Aspen Award must be a graduating senior who, at the time of graduation, has not only completed the major program in philosophy, but has also completed the major program in at least one other discipline, and who has done one or both of the following: 1) minored in a third discipline in addition to the double major, 2) worked extensively to publically promote philosophy and philosophical thinking in extracurricular venues.
