Seventeen Misericordia University biology and biochemistry majors participated in research projects in which their findings were presented at the 91st Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science competition in April. Misericordia researchers made 13 oral and poster presentations on subjects addressing microbial ecology and education, biology and ecology of bacteria, plants and fungi, aquatic ecology and water quality, and more.

During the academic year, Misericordia University students worked on scientific projects under faculty supervision, and developed poster and oral presentations based upon their findings after making application and being accepted for presentation at the annual event.

The Misericordia University research team of Alice Messler, Waverly, and Cosima Wiese, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, presented in the oral session on "Antimicrobial Activity as Related to Alkaloid Composition of Root Extracts from Berberine Containing Plants.''

The following students, under faculty supervision, worked on research and poster presentations: Zachary Murphy, Lewistown; Jessica Biegler, Nelli Horvath, Ann Rodgers and Andras Hajnal, "Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Alters Oleolyethanolamide Mediated Ingestive Behavioral Responses"; Tiffany Erney, Jim Thorpe; Jeremy Osko, Ashley; Frank Yepez Castillo, Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry, and Angela L. Asirvatham, B.V.Sc., Ph.D., associate professor of biology, "The Effect of Nicotine on the Expression of A-Kinase Anchoring Proteins in Rat Pheochromocytoma Cells"; Noelle Mondulick, Harding; Shawna Stevens, Shenandoah, and Dr. Asirvatham, "The Role of Phosphodiesterases in Neonatal Rat Schwann Cell Proliferation";

Hunter Pates, Columbus, N.J., "A Comparison of Macroinvertegrate Functional Feeding Groups in Artificial Leaf Litter Packs and Natural Leaf Litter in Trout Brook and Leonard's Creek, PA"; Michael Pheasant, East Stroudsburg; Timothy Kennedy, Dallas, and Barbara McCraith, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, "An Analysis of Fish Stomach Contents and Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Trout Brook and Leonard's Creek, Luzerne and Wyoming Counties"; Skyler Gerrity, Towanda, "Abundance and Distribution of Native and Non-Native Crayfish Taxa in the Ten-Mile Creek Watershed of the Huyck Preserve"; Kennedy, Pheasant and Dr. McCraith, "Comparison of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Diversity in Trout Brook and Leonard's Creek";

David Dorbad, Exeter; Garrett Drumheller, Elverson; Nicholas Essington, Brick, N.J.; Nicholas vonEgypt, Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; Alex Romeo, and Larry D. Corpus, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, "Aquatic Macroinvertebrates from a Freshwater Seep in Luzerne County"; Jessica Moss, Hunlock Creek, "Horizontal Transmission of Nosocomial Infections from Healthcare Providers' to their Patients"; Katelyn Serino, Shavertown, and Anthony Serino, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, "The Distribution of Parasites at Forest Edge Sites," and Lydia Watkins, Springville, and Dr. Serino, "Prevalence of Lyme Disease in Forested Areas.''
