Program at a Glance

Misericordia University’s Radiation Therapy Certificate Program is a full-time, online synchronous program designed for radiologic technologists certified and registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography who want to transition into radiation therapy.

  • Format: Full-time, online synchronous coursework with required in-person clinical education
  • Start: Date: First cohort begins Fall 2027
  • Length: 12 months across four consecutive academic terms
  • Credits: 44 credits
  • Clinical Education: Approximately 24 clinical hours per week completed during weekdays over a minimum of three days
  • Credentialing Pathway: Radiation Therapy is a primary eligibility pathway through ARRT. Students should review current credentialing requirements on the ARRT website.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be radiologic technologists certified and registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography.

Applicants should also be prepared to participate in full-time online synchronous coursework and required weekday clinical education.

JRCERT: Accreditation, Standards & Mission

Misericordia University’s Radiation Therapy Certificate Program is currently seeking initial accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

The JRCERT is the only agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for the accreditation of educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry.

Mission

The mission of the Radiation Therapy Certificate Program is to provide a comprehensive education preparing students for entry-level practice in radiation therapy who provide optimum patient care through technical competence and professional conduct.

Essential Functions

Radiation therapy students must be able to meet the physical, cognitive, communication, and professional demands required for safe and effective performance in the clinical environment.

Mental and Concentration Demands

  • Concentrate and maintain focus for extended periods of time.
  • Learn, process, retain, and apply new information efficiently.
  • Apply theoretical concepts to clinical radiation oncology practice.

Physical and Motor Skills

  • Stand, walk, bend, balance, reach, grasp, push, pull, and assist with patient positioning.
  • Move equipment, wheelchairs, stretchers, positioning devices, and related clinical materials safely.
  • Demonstrate the strength, coordination, and endurance needed for patient care activities.
  • Perform fine motor tasks accurately and safely.

Visual and Hearing Requirements

  • Read written, typed, and computer-generated information.
  • Evaluate simulation images and treatment verification images.
  • Monitor patients using cameras, display monitors, and auditory systems.
  • Distinguish colors, sounds, voices, and spatial relationships.

Communication and Professional Skills

  • Communicate clearly and effectively in spoken and written English.
  • Use therapeutic communication with patients, families, faculty, staff, and healthcare professionals.
  • Interpret verbal and nonverbal communication and respond appropriately.
  • Work respectfully with diverse patient populations and healthcare teams.
  • Maintain professionalism, ethical conduct, and safe performance in stressful situations.

Clinical Environment

  • Students may be exposed to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, ionizing radiation, magnetic fields, electrical hazards, and other clinical workplace risks.

  • In addition to physical and environmental hazards, students may also encounter emotional and psychological challenges. Working in a radiation oncology setting often involves caring for patients undergoing cancer treatment, which can be emotionally demanding due to patient vulnerability, serious diagnoses, and end-of-life care situations.

  • Students may experience stress, emotional fatigue, and compassion fatigue as part of the clinical learning environment. The program encourages the development of resilience and provides resources to help students manage the emotional demands of clinical practice. Students must follow all safety protocols and correctly use the required personal protective equipment.

Clinical Education

Students participate in in-person clinical education at an approved radiation therapy clinical education site.

Clinical education consists of unpaid experience and requires weekday availability. Students should expect to complete approximately 24 clinical hours per week over a minimum of three weekdays.

Clinical Site Expectations

  • Students are responsible for securing a clinical education site.
  • If the selected site does not already have JRCERT approval, the Program Director will submit required documentation for approval consideration.
  • Clinical experiences support competency-based patient care, treatment delivery, safety, documentation, and professional practice skills.

Scheduling Considerations

  • Clinical education takes place during weekday hours.
  • Some didactic courses may require clinical experiences for projects, presentations, reports, or competency development.
  • Students may need to adjust clinical schedules slightly to complete required learning experiences.
